Harvard-Yale Tops Oxford-Cambridge, 26-10, as Crimson Host Historic HYOC Meet

Cambridge, Mass. - The Harvard-Yale team topped the Oxford-Cambridge team in the 126th meetup between the four universities for the biannual HYOC meet with combined team scores of 26-10. On the men's side, HY won 12-6 and on the women's side, HY won 13-4. With this win, HY has won every meet since 1993: 14 in a row. 

Harvard Wins

  • Alexander Kolesnikoff set a school and meet record to take the lead in the NCAA with a winning throw of 20.69m (67' 10.75") in the shot put. 
  • Sarah Omoregie ended the day with a personal best and win in the shot put of 17.66m (57' 11.25") to sit just .25m off the Harvard school record. Estel Valeanu took second in the event with her personal best of 15.15 (49' 8.5") to move up to third in the Crimson record books. 
  • Kenneth Ikeji got the day started for the Crimson with a win in the men's hammer throw and a meet record in the 126-year-old tradition with his throw of 69.67 (228' 7").  
  • The Crimson topped the podium in the women's hammer throw as well, with Stephanie Ratcliffe taking first with a 67.16m (220' 4") throw and Cammy Garabian in second with a 57.37m (168' 6") throw). 
  • Kyle Murphy took the gold medal in the men's long jump, flying 6.88m (22' 7") into the wind to land further than anyone else in the competition. 
  • Anastasia Retsa cleared 4.20m (13' 9.25") in the pole vault, as the event was moved indoors due to the high winds at the outdoor track. Her clearance sets a new indoor school record for the Crimson.
  • Valeanu's strong season in the discus continued as she set a new personal best and inched closer to the school record with a throw of 56.17m (184' 3").
  • Daniel Falode set a new personal best in the men's triple jump, jumping 15.80m (51' 10") to move up to 11th in the nation and move inches closer to the Harvard record.
  • Kristin Otervik led the entire 3000m of the women's steeplechase, running a majority of the race alone in the front and crossing the line in 10:24. 
  • Reed Pryor matched Otervik in bringing home a Crimson title in the men's steeplechase, winning the race in 9:07.94. 
  • Maia Ramsden raced to first place in the women's 1500m run, leading the pack and pacing herself to a 4:15.77.
  • Josefina Biernacki took first place in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.07, beating out the competitors from the Achilles Club of Oxford-Cambridge.
  • Aaron Shirley cut 300m off his typical race to win a two-person contest in the 110m hurdles in 14.44. 
  • Victoria Bossong made her debut in the 400m run this outdoor season at the HYOC meet, running 55.23 to win the event. 
  • Harvard runners Egbe Ndip-Agbor and Adaji Osaro-Igwe took first and second in the 100m dash with times of 12.10 and 12.16. 
  • Lance Ward had an excellent start in the men's 100m dash, shooting out in front of the field in the opening meters and holding his lead for a full 10.48 seconds. 
  • Jacklynn Okereke led an entire lap from the outside lane in the women's 400m hurdles, winning the race in a time of 1:02.82.
  • Osaro-Igwe jumped up to the top of the podium in the 200m dash, taking a commanding lead out of the blocks and only increasing her distance ahead of the competition throughout the race, winning in 24.78. 
  • Similar to her 1500m race earlier in the day, Ramsden took control from the first few paces in the 5000m run, setting a new personal best of 16:08.27 to win the race by nearly 15 seconds. 
  • The Crimson men swept the 5000m to end the individual running events for the day, as Graham Blanks took first in 14:07.67 followed by Acer Iverson and Ben Rosa. 
  • The combined mixed relay team of Harvard and Yale ended the meet with a win over Oxford and Cambridge as Bossong and Ward helped the team run 3:29.22 in the 4x400m relay.

Crimson athletes will stay local to the Northeast in the upcoming weekend, heading to compete at Providence College on April 14 and at the UConn Northeast Challenge from April 14-15.
