CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Competition continued this summer for current and former Harvard fencers with USA Fencing at the 2023 Pan-America Senior Championships concluding last week, as well as the Tbilisi World Cup held earlier in the month.
Rising junior
Lauren Scruggs started off June placing 14
th in Tbilisi in the women's foil on June 2. She later helped Team USA earn gold in the team competition on Sunday (June 4), vaulting the U.S. to the top of the women's foil team rankings for Olympic qualification.
Last week at the Pan America Senior Championships in Lima, Peru, four Harvard fencers were in action with USA Fencing, including
Eli Dershwitz '19,
Elizabeth Tartakovsky,
Mitchell Saron, and Scruggs.
Both Scruggs (women's foil) and Tartakovsky (women's saber) earned bronze in individual competition. Tartakovsky claimed a gold medal in team competition, while Scruggs earned silver.
On the men's side Saron placed fifth in men's saber, while Dershwitz took seventh place. Both were on the gold-medal winning USA Fencing squad in the team event.
Competition will continue at Summer Nationals, beginning this week (June 30-July 9) in Phoenix, Arizona. Later next month, the World Fencing Championships will take place in Milan, Italy from July 22-30, with assistant coach
Dagmara Wozniak joining Harvard athletes as team captain in competition that week.
HARVARD FENCING REUNION
Harvard fencing hosted its annual reunion at the fencing room at Malkin Athletic Center earlier in the month, with several generations of Harvard fencers represented at the event. Harvard coaches connected with former student-athletes from six different decades in program history.
