HENLEY-ON-THAMES, England – Harvard Men's Heavyweight Rowing enjoyed a successful second day on the water at the Henley Royal Regatta in England. All four boats, consisting of current and former rowers, tasted victory and advanced in their respective brackets.
To open the second day of racing, the Crimson quartet of Tyler Horler, Henry Jones '23, Thomas Macky '23 and Kenny Coplan '23 took the water to compete against Melbourne University in The Visitors' Challenge Cup (M4-). The Australian entry, however, was disqualified, sending Harvard to the next round where it will face Oxford Brookes University, which defeated Isis Boat Club and London Rowing Club.
For the second straight day, James Clarke '19 was triumphant, competing for the London Rowing Club in The Britannia Challenge Cup (M4+). He and his boat outpaced Kingston Rowing Club by 1-and-one-quarter lengths, clocking in at 7:30. Clarke and LRC will now face Thames Rowing Club 'A', a winner over Royal Chester Rowing Club.
Recent graduates Douwe de Graaf '23 and Calvin Tarczy '23 were part of the Leander Club's men's quad entry in The Visitors' Challenge Cup. The Crimson duo helped the boat defeat Salisbury School by 1-and-three-quarters lengths (7:28) to move on in the bracket where it will oppose Syracuse.
The Harvard men's eight was victorious for the second straight day in its effort to capture The Temple Challenge Cup, taking down University of London 'C'. Isabella Rhyu '23, Owen Marcovitz, Cameron Beyki, Apostolos Lykomitros, Patrick Adams '23, Leo Bessler, Alexander Sullivan, Alexander Grundy and Josh Brangan combined to post a time of 6:45, which was 3-and-three-quarter lengths better than their foe. The Crimson will now face Oxford Brookes University 'A' after it defeated Princeton 'B'.
Cameron McInroy '23, Henry Bellew '23 and rising junior Cate Engles, meanwhile, rowed for Adams House, Harvard against Cambridge University and Sean Hayes '22, who was a member of the Crimson lightweight rowing team, in a first-round matchup of The Prince Albert Challenge Cup (M4+). The trio emerged on top, winning by 2-and-one-quarter lengths (7:08) and moving on to face Brown.
The Adams House boat will be the lone Harvard-affiliated entry in action on Thursday. It is scheduled to race at 11:10 a.m. ET.
