CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard fencing embarks to Queens, N.Y. for the St. John's Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 20. The tournament marks Harvard's return to collegiate action, as the Crimson last took the strip as a team at the Beanpot on Nov. 15.
WHAT TO KNOW:
- The women's team enters the St. John's Invitational with record of 9-1, competing at the Air Force Western Invitational and the Beanpot.
- The Crimson's lone loss of the season was a 16-11 defeat against three-time defending national champion Notre Dame.
- In its last outing, the women's team brough the Beanpot back to Cambridge for a 16th consecutive year.
- First-year women's foil fencer Jessica Zi Jia Guo is a perfect 19-0 to start her college career.
- Fellow foil fencer Lauren Scruggs went a perfect 9-0 at the Beanpot. The Queens, N.Y. native and defending NCAA Women's Foil National Champion has a 28-2 record this season.
- The men hold a 8-2 record this year over its first two meets, posting seven wins in a row. The two losses came against top-ranked Notre Dame and Ohio State at the Air Force Western Invitational.
- Last time out, the men's team won the Beanpot for a 15th straight year, defeating local rivals Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brandeis, and Boston College.
- In a pivotal 14-13 win against tournament host Brandeis, senior men's epee fencer Jonas Hansen went a perfect 3-0 to secure the Beanpot title for Harvard.
- The men's squad will be without two fencers for the St. John's Invitational, as the pair are competing in international tournaments.
- First-year foil fencer Daniel Zhang will feature in the Junior Men's Foil World Cup in Aix-En-Provence, France, while sophomore Matthew Linsky stays in Boston, Mass. for the Men' Saber World Cup.
- The women's team will also miss sophomore saber fencer Zoe Kim, as the Basking Ridge, N.J. native will be in Segovia, Spain for the Junior Women's Saber World Cup.
