Sailing Wins Victorian Urn Trophy, Finishes Second at Schell Trophy

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing finished its Fall 2024 regular season with an impressive showing, winning the Victorian Urn Trophy and posting a second-place performance at the Schell Trophy. The Crimson also appeared at two local regattas, competing at the Nickerson Trophy and Terrier Invitational.

Victorian Urn Trophy | Providence, R.I.

Harvard captured its first Victorian Urn Trophy since at least 2008-09 (complete records only available from 2009-10) by finishing with 124 points to top the 17-team field. The conditions on Saturday were the best of the campaign, with winds ranging from 12-18 knots and reaching the 20s occasionally. Sunday was colder and not as windy, but still great for sailing. The Crimson A-boat of Cordelia Burn and Margo Silliman won four races, including three of the first four, to post a score of 65, which was second among A-division entries. Harvard's B-boat featured Zoey Ziskind and a rotation of three crew members in Peyton Hadfield (1-2, 9-12), Kate Danielson (3-8) and Christina Chen (13-14). The quartet finished in the top 10 in all 14 races and was victorious in Race 5 and 14 to finish with a division-best 59. At the end of the event, Harvard finished ahead of runner-up Brown (140) and third-place finisher Yale (141).

Schell Trophy | New Haven, Conn.

The Crimson turned in a solid performance at the Schell Trophy out in The Constitution State. Representing Harvard in Division A were Justin Callahan, Kennedy Leehealey (1-6, 9-13) and Aidan Pesce (7-8). The trio finished in the top 10 in 12 of 13 races, with victories coming in Race 2, 5, and 10, and completed the regatta with a second-place effort after logging a score of 72. The Crimson B-boat, consisting of Mitchell Callahan and Alexandra Dorofeev, never finished below ninth place en route to the division's second-best score of 65. The duo won Race 5 and was a top-3 finisher on five different occasions. Harvard's overall score of 137 trailed only Roger Williams and was ahead of third-place Yale (159).

Nickerson Trophy | Medford, Mass.

Sailing on Mystic Lake featured a breeze ranging from 6-12 knots, with occasional puffs in the high teens, on Saturday. Sunday featured stable winds in the morning, before shifty winds took over in the afternoon. Overall, 14 races were contested, with Harvard's A-boat of Harrison Strom, Theresa Straw (1-8) and Amelie Zucker (9-14) placing fifth in its division with a score of 68. The trio combined to finish in the top 10 in each race and finished with a flurry, going 2-2-1-8-1 in the final five races. The Crimson's B-division sailors took on different roles over the course of two days, with William Bourell serving as skipper for Races 1-6 (with crew Chloe Sow) before switching to crew for Races 7-14. Straw, meanwhile, hopped from her A-division duties to the B-boat to perform skipper duties for Races 7-14. Harvard came in 10th place in the 18-team field, notching a score of 196. Brown won the regatta with a 66.

Terrier Invitational | Boston, Mass.

The one-day regatta on the Charles River brought winds ranging from 10-16 knots under sunny skies. The Crimson A-division sailing duo of Olivia Hogan-Lopez and Catherine Mignone opened the 6-race event with a second-place effort, which was the first of three top-10 performances (10th in Race 4, 6th in Race 5), en route to a final tally of 65. Sarra Guezguez and Noelle Keto occupied Harvard's B-boat and the pairing saved its top finish for last, coming in 10th place, to round out its score of 74. The Crimson as a whole recorded a 139 to finish in 12th place. Boston University's No. 1 boat won the regatta with a 39.
