Men's Fencing Defeats Princeton on Day One of Ivy League Fencing Championships

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The defending Ivy League fencing champion Harvard men's fencing finished the first day of the 2024 Ivy League Championships in New York, N.Y. The Crimson came up short in its first match against Columbia but responded with a vital victory against Princeton.

The opening round saw Harvard paired with tournament host Columbia. The Lions edged the Crimson in a narrow contest, 15-12.

Harvard ended the day with a key 15-12 victory against Princeton. First-Year Daniel Zhang, junior James Chen and senior Jonas Hansen all went undefeated against the Tigers. In saber action, two key wins from first-year Prash Subbiah helped turn the tide in the Harvard win.

Hansen led all Harvard fencers in wins with a 5-1 record during day one action of the Ivy League Championships. The defending NCAA men's epee national champion also leads all epee fencers at the tournament in victories. Hansen's +8 touch differential is also a team high.

Men's epee led all Harvard weapons at the Ivy League Championships, tallying a 12-6 record.

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Harvard men's fencing went 1-1 at day one of the Ivy League Championships, falling to tournament host Columbia and beating Princeton.
  • The Crimson currently sit in a tie for second place in the team standings with Penn and Princeton.
  • Hansen led Harvard in wins (five) and touch differential (+8). The defending NCAA men's epee national champion also leads all epee fencers in the tournament in victories.
