Skiing Gets Dartmouth Carnival Started with Multiple Top-20 Finishes

LYME CENTER and HANOVER, N.H. – Senior Elsie Halvorsen finished in 11th place in the women's giant slalom, and junior Quincy Donley and senior Laura Appleby both posted top-20 finishes in the women's 1.3k skate sprint as Harvard University skiing opened competition on day one of the Dartmouth Carnival on Friday.
 
In nordic competition at Oak Hill Outdoor Center, Donley (17th) and Appleby (20th) each advanced to the quarterfinals and finished in the top 20 of the women's 1.3k skate sprint while first-year Sam Gallaudet led the men's side in the men's 1.3k skate sprint, advancing to the quarterfinals and finishing 24th overall.
 
In alpine action at the Dartmouth Skiway, Halvorsen paced the Crimson with her 11th place finish in women's giant slalom, marking her first top-11 finish of the year. The Crimson's alpine team opened the weekend with an NCAA GS qualifier on Thursday as part of rescheduled events from the UVM Carnival with Halvorsen and senior Liam McNamara both posting top-30 finishes.
 
Harvard will close competition at the Dartmouth Carnival tomorrow – Saturday, Feb. 10 – with alpine competing in the slalom and nordic taking part in the 15k classic. 

Harvard Highlights: Alpine Day 2 (Friday)

  • Senior Elsie Halvorsen came in 11th place in the women's giant slalom, notching her first top-11 finish of the 2024 carnival season. She has placed in the top-30 in all six events this year and tallied her fourth top-13 finish. Halvorsen finished eighth in run two and 13th in run one, clocking a 1:53.27 (57.10 run one, 56.17 run two). She tallied 29 EISA points and 24 NCAA points.
  • On the men's side, senior Liam McNamara (29th, 1:50.63), junior Matt Ryan (30th, 1:50.63), and first-year Josh Rosenberg (35th, 1:51.23) all came within six spots of one another in men's giant slalom competition. McNamara, Ryan, and Rosenberg notched 14, 13, and nine EISA points respectively. 

Harvard Highlights: Nordic Day 1 (Friday)

  • Junior Quincy Donley placed 17th overall in the women's 1.3k skate sprint, collecting 26 EISA points and 14 NCAA points. She posted her fourth top-25 finish of the season. Donley came in 13th in the qualifier (3:08.74) before finishing fourth in quarterfinal five (3:04.93).
  • Senior Laura Appleby followed Donley with a 20th-place overall finish for 24 EISA points and 11 NCAA points. She notched a season-best finish in her third event since returning from injury. Appleby came in 22nd in the qualifier (3:11.78) before placing fourth in quarterfinal four (3:03.02).
  • First-year Sam Gallaudet paced the Crimson men in the 1.3k skate sprint with a 24th-place overall finish for 20 EISA points and nine NCAA points. He came in 28th in the qualifier (2:39.41) before placing fifth in quarterfinal five (2:38.00). Gallaudet recorded his third top-30 finish of the year.
  • Junior Tali Wong came in 38th place in the women's 1.3k skate, tallying 11 EISA points behind a season-best finish.
  • As a team, the Harvard women came in seventh with 61 points and the men finished 11th with 29 points.

Harvard Highlights: Alpine Day 1 (Thursday)

  • Senior Elsie Halvorsen placed 25th in women's giant slalom with a time of 2:01.11 (1:00.25 run one, 1:00.86 run two), collecting six NCAA points. She has placed in the top-30 at all five events this carnival season, including four top-25 finishes.
  • Senior Liam McNamara posted a 25th-place effort in men's giant slalom behind a time of 1:56.49 (57.99 run one, 58.50 run two), tallying six NCAA points. He came in 12th place in run one. This carnival season, he has finished in the top-30 at all five events, including three top-25 showings.
  • First-year Josh Rosenberg – wearing bib number 72 – worked his way up the field, finishing in 42nd place (1:58.43, 59.37 run one, 59.06 run two).

Following the Dartmouth Carnival, Harvard will compete at the Williams Carnival from Friday, Feb. 16 to Saturday, Feb. 17 with alpine events taking place at Jiminy Peak in Hancock, Massachusetts and nordic competition occurring at Prospect Mountain in Woodford, Vermont. The alpine team will also close out the rescheduled UVM Carnival with the slalom on Sunday, Feb. 18 at Catamount Mountain in Egremont, Massachusetts.
