Two Crimson Wrestlers Advance to Semi-Finals After Day One of EIWA Championships

LEWISBURG, Penn. –– The EIWA conference tournament began on Friday, as ten Harvard wrestlers faced off in two matches each guaranteed. Junior Diego Sotelo and Sophomore Jack Crook both advanced to the semi-finals in their weight classes after going 2-0 on the day. Five Crimson wrestlers advanced to the quarter finals after strong performances in the first matches of the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • No. 3 seed 125-pound wrestler Sotelo defeated DelViscio (Navy) by major decision, 16-5. Next up, he faced No. 11 Wagner (BING) and earned his second major decision on the day.
  • Sotelo is set to face a familiar opponent in the semi-finals: Brett Ungar from Cornell. He lost to Ungar in an early season match up at the Journeyman Classic, yet Sotelo won the match the year prior in their first meeting.
  • Jack Crook had a strong performance in the first round against Nies (American), in a 9-3 victory. Match number two for Crook did not start out as well as the first, yet Crook executed a final minute take down to give him the lead as time ran out.
  • The No. 6 seed Crook will face No. 2 Williams (Army) in the semi-finals. Crook and Williams already met once this year, as Crook came out on top in a win by decision, 8-4.
  • Senior Philip Conigliaro defeated Connolly (LIU) with ease in the first round, 17-4. Yet, in round two, Conigliaro could not hold on to the slim lead and lost back points with thirty seconds to spare, resulting in a loss to Baker (Cornell).
  • Sophomore Jimmy Harrington faced off in a dual season rematch vs. Princeton's Camillaci. His opponent got the best of Harrington in sudden victory last time they met, but the Crimson wrestler came out on top in this EIWA round, winning 5-3. Harrington lost in the quarterfinals to Revano (Penn).
  • Junior Cael Berg won in his first round appearance vs. Slotnick (Hofstra) by a slim margin, 6-5. This is Berg's first match since before the dual season and picked up a massive victory. He advanced to the quarterfinals in which he was defeated by No. 1 Ramirez (Cornell) by fall.
