Baseball Battles Penn on Senior Day, Drops Doubleheader, 7-5, 8-3

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball battled the University of Pennsylvania in an Ivy League doubleheader, dropping a narrow 7-5 decision in 10 innings in game one before falling 8-3 in game two on Saturday afternoon at O'Donnell Field.
 
Opening its final home series of the season, the Crimson (11-24, 7-10 Ivy) rallied to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth in game one and forced extra innings with a run in the ninth before the Quakers (17-20, 9-8 Ivy) took the lid lifter and held off a rally from the hosts in the nightcap. Harvard stands two games back of Penn for fourth place in the Ivy standings.
 
In game one, junior William Lybrook went 2-for-4 with a home run, RBI, and run, senior Ben Rounds finished 2-for-5 with a double, RBI, and run, and sophomore Max Lane posted a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI and run. Junior right-hander Sean Matson threw 5.0 innings in the start, allowing two runs – one earned – on three hits and five walks with nine strikeouts.
 
In game two, Rounds notched a double and two RBIs, junior George Cooper and Lane each tallied two hits, senior Peter Messervy contributed a triple, and sophomore Callan Fang posted a double. In relief, first-year right-hander Truman Pauley threw 5.2 innings, permitting three runs – two earned – on six hits and four walks with five strikeouts.
 
Prior to game two, the Crimson honored the six members of its senior class – Jake Berger, Porter Jordheim, Peter Messervy, Uday Narottam, Ben Rounds, and Chris Snopek – while remembering the late Joseph J. O'Donnell '67, who passed away this past January and for whom the Crimson's home field and head coaching position are named.

GAME 1: Penn 7, Harvard 5 (10 Innings)

Junior William Lybrook hit a home run for the fourth straight Ivy game, and the Crimson rallied to take a lead in the bottom of the eighth before Harvard fell to Penn in 10 innings, 7-5, in the series opener.
 
Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Crimson scored twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth to move ahead 4-2 and rallied again after trailing 5-4 in the ninth to force extra innings at 5-5 before the Quakers scored twice in the top of the 10th to take the decision.
 
Lybrook went 2-for-4 with a home run, RBI, and run, senior Ben Rounds finished 2-for-5 with a double, RBI, and run, and sophomore Max Lane posted a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI and run. How It Happened

  • Penn opened the game's scoring, plating an unearned run in the top of the second.
  • Matson tallied eight strikeouts through the first four innings to hold Penn to the one unearned run during that time.
  • The Crimson threatened in the bottom of the fourth, placing runners on first and third with two outs following singles from Rounds and Lybrook before the Quakers escaped the jam.
  • The Quakers made their edge 2-0 with a run in the top of the fifth. Matson allowed just one run after facing a bases-loaded situation with no outs.
  • Harvard knotted the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. After Lybrook hit a solo home run to left center – his fourth straight Ivy game with a homer – Snopek came home to score following a bunt from Lane.
  • The Crimson took a 4-2 lead in the last of the eighth with two more runs. Rounds plated a go-ahead run with a double down the left field line before later coming home to score on a sacrifice fly from Berger.
  • The visitors went ahead 5-4 in the top of the ninth behind a three-run double.
  • Harvard tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single from Fang.
  • The Quakers scored a pair of runs on a two-run single in the top of the 10th to re-take a 7-5 lead. 

GAME 2: Penn 8, Harvard 3

Senior Ben Rounds hit a two-run double that pulled the Crimson within one run in the fifth inning, but Harvard fell to Penn, 8-3, in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
 
Facing a 4-0 deficit, the Crimson plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 4-3 before the visiting Quakers scored the contest's final four runs.

  • The Crimson countered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 4-3. Messervy initiated the scoring – hitting a triple before hustling home on a wild pitch. Rounds then hit a two-run double to left center to cut the hosts' deficit to one run.
  • Penn scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh to take a 5-3 lead and tacked on a run in the top of the eighth to move the score to 6-3.
  • The Quakers tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth to pull ahead 8-3.
