Football Opens 2024 with Five Former Standouts in NFL Organizations

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Football is set to have five former players on NFL rosters as the league opens its 2024 campaign tonight. Included in its group of five are its two Super Bowl LVIII participants from last season in Kyle Juszczyk '13 and Truman Jones '23.

Juszczyk is entering his 12th season in the NFL and his eighth with San Francisco after playing his first four years with Baltimore. The fullback has made eight straight Pro Bowls, was a First-Team AP All-Pro in 2023, and appeared in two Super Bowls (LIV, LVIII).

Jones, meanwhile, helped Kansas City raise the Vince Lombardi Trophy last season and enters his second year in the Chiefs organization. When Jones and Juszczyk met in Las Vegas, Nevada, for Super Bowl LVIII, it marked the first time two Crimson players appeared at the same Super Bowl.

Tyler Ott begins his first season with Washington and his ninth in the NFL. After helping Baltimore to the AFC Championship Game in 2023, the long snapper joins the Commanders is his return to the NFC East. The 2014 Harvard graduate began his career with the New York Giants in 2015, before his journey took him to Cincinnati and Seattle. Ott is a one-time Pro Bowler, earning the nod in 2020 for the Seahawks.

Chris Smith '22 is back for Year 2 with Detroit after a first season that saw the Lions reach the NFC Championship Game. The defensive lineman and his Detroit teammates, however, lost to Juszczyk and the 49ers, falling short of Super Bowl LVIII.

Aaron Shampklin '21 enters 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former standout running back has spent time with Dallas, Indianapolis and the Los Angeles Chargers over the previous two years. A native of Paramount, California, Shampklin will look to help the Steelers reach the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

The 2024 Harvard Football team, meanwhile, will begin its campaign on Sept. 21, when it welcomes Stetson to Harvard Stadium. Kickoff is slated for noon and the contest will air live on ESPN+.
