RALEIGH, NC – No. 21 Harvard men's tennis (1-1, 0-0 Ivy) got into the win column for the first time this season with a convincing 5-2 victory over No. 22 NC State (2-1, 0-0 ACC).
"This was an important bounce back match and the team responded to the challenge," said
Andrew Rueb '95, the Scott Mead '77 Head Coach for Harvard Men's Tennis, following the match. "NC State is a strong top 25 team that is well coached and it took everyone's best effort to get over the line today."
For the second straight match, the Crimson pulled ahead 1-0 with a strong doubles performance.
Melchior Delloye and
Valdemar Pape registered their first win of the season, dropping Martin Borisiouk and Williams Manning (NC State) in convincing fashion, 6-2. The doubles point was secured as the No. 71 nationally ranked duo of
Masato Perera and
Benjamin Privara picked up a ranked win over No. 102 Braeden Shick and Fons van Sambeek (NC State), 6-4. "Our doubles was sharp and we committed to our plays," said Rueb.
The Crimson success carried directly into singles action as Milavsky collected his second ranked win in as many matches. The senior dominated the No. 17 nationally ranked singles player, Braden Shick (NC State), in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
After the Wolfpack got on the board with a win at the No. 3 spot, Privara added his own ranked win, dropping No. 26 Martin Borisiouk (NC State), with identical 6-4 results to move the Crimson within a point of clinching.
Valdemar Pape registered his second win of the dual season and eighth overall victory with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory over Fons van Sambeek at the No. 4 position to clinch the team win.
Melchior Delloye registered the final win of the day, defeating William Manning (NC State), 6-3, 5-7, 10-8, at the No. 5 spot. With the victory, the Crimson secured its first victory of the season with a 5-2 defeat of the No. 22 ranked Wolfpack.
"In singles, our top of the lineup got us off to a strong 3-0 lead. Danny did a great job in the No. 1 spot against a very tough senior captain in Braeden Shick. And shoutout to Benji for posting his first Harvard singles victory. Valdemar and Melchior continued the strong showing and made another step forward in their games."
