NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Harvard Women's Swimming and Diving won five of seven swimming races on day one of the yearly HYP (Harvard-Yale-Princeton) meet at Yale's Kiphuth Exhibition Pool. With its performance, the Crimson leads the Bulldogs, 83-67, and the Tigers, 86-64, heading into Saturday's final day of competition.
How It Happened
- The divers opened action on Friday by competing on the three-meter board. Elizabeth Miclau was Harvard's top performer, tallying a score of 288.55, which was good for fourth place. Amy Wotovich (288.40) and Nina Janmyr (281.10), meanwhile, came in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
- When the swimming events took the spotlight, so did the Crimson, winning the first five races. Harvard's 200 medley relay starting things off as Anya Mostek, Aleksandra Denisenko, Sydney Lu and Blythe Wieclawek won by nearly two seconds, defeating Princeton's quartet 1:37.75-1:39.28. The Crimson's effort was a season best.
- Alexandra Bastone obliterated her season best in the 1,000 free and blew away the field in the process. The sophomore, who came in with a season-best time of 10:00.62, knocked off 30 seconds, winning the race in 9:30.27, which was a school, Ivy League and pool record. Princeton's Dakota Tucker was the runner-up at 10:02.40.
- Bastone was at it again in the very next event, leading a Crimson group that placed three swimmers in the top six. Bastone clocked in at 1:46.23 to capture the race, while Molly Hamlin (1:48.16), Kaylee McDonald (1:49.27) and Giulia Viacava (1:49.59) posted the third-, fifth- and sixth-fastest times. They all swam their fastest 200 frees of the season.
- Mostek won an entertaining 100 back, edging Princeton's Isabella Korbly by 0.39 seconds. The junior finished the event in 53.42. Hamlin came in fourth with a season-best time of 54.04.
- Similar to Mostek's victory, Denisenko won an equally entertaining 100 breast. The senior registered a season-best 1:00.53, touching the pad 0.14 seconds ahead of Yale's Jessey Li (1:00.67). Gabriella Augustyn came in third place, matching her season best (1:02.82).
- Lu came up just short of delivering Harvard a sixth win, finishing in second place in the 50 free (22.87). Princeton's Ela Noble won the event in 22.79.
