Sailing to Finish Regular-Season Fall Slate This Weekend

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing will wrap up its regular-season fall campaign this weekend with three local regattas. The Crimson is slated to complete on Saturday at the Terrier Invitational, and at the two-day Victorian Urn Trophy and Schell Trophy.

Forecast

Terrier Invitational, Victorian Urn Trophy, Schell Trophy | Cambridge, Mass.

Saturday will feature temperatures in the low-to-mid 50s, partly cloudy skies and winds in the 6-7 knot range (NW, NNW). Sunday at the Victorian Urn and Schell Trophies, temps will be a tad cooler, with the sun trying to peek through the clouds and similar wind speeds to Saturday.

What to Know

  • The Crimson is coming off an impressive win at the Open Atlantic Coast Championship and top-5 efforts at the Yale Women's Regatta and Norman Reid Team Race.
  • Harvard's victory at the Open ACC event was particularly impressive due to the nature of the competition. Regarded as the top open regatta of the fall, the Crimson won its third title in four years after finishing with a score of 135. Justin Callahan and crews Jacob Posner and Aidan Pesce handled the A-division (49), while Mitchell Callahan (skipper), Rosella Irfan and Amelie Zucker sailed in the B-division (86).
  • For the fourth year in a row, Justin Callahan skippered a boat at Open ACCs that was tops in his division, winning the A- and B-groups twice.
  • The Crimson came in fourth place at the 18-team Yale Women's Regatta. Zoey Ziskind, Skyler Reading, Peyton Hadfield and Julia Downey sailed against the A-field, while Kate Danielson and JJ Drummond competed in the B-division. Harvard finished with an A-score of 71, while its B-entry turned in a 68. At 139, the Crimson finished behind Yale (99), Dartmouth (116), Stanford (116) and Brown (120).
  • Harvard traveled to nearby Dorchester for the Norman Reid Team Race on Saturday. Xavier Ayala-Vermont and Downey occupied the Crimson's top boat, with Theresa Straw and Grace Naylor paired in one, and Caroline Straw and Catherine Mignone competing in another. Harvard finished the one-day regatta with a 3-9 record, sitting behind Boston College (12-0), Tufts (9-3) and Brown (6-6), but ahead of Brandeis (0-12).
  • Harvard returns to the Victorian Urn Trophy looking to defend its title from a season ago. When the Crimson won with a final score of 124 to top the 17-team field, it was its first Urn win since at least 2008-09. Back from that team are Ziskind, Hadfield, Danielson and Christina Chen, who all competed in the B-division. The quartet finished in the top 10 in all 14 races and won Race 5 and 14 to post a division-best score of 59.
  • The Crimson enters this year's Schell Trophy looking to improve upon its second-place performance in 2024. Led by skippers Justin Callahan (A) and Mitchell Callahan (B), Harvard finished with an overall score of 137, trailing only Roger Williams (94). In addition to the Callahans, Pesce was a part of that 2024 group, serving as crew for a pair of races in Justin Callahan's boat. The Crimson finished in the top 10 in 12 of 13 A-division races, winning three times. Over in the B-division, Harvard registered the top score (65) after never finishing lower than ninth place in any competition. The Crimson will be in search of its first Schell win since 2023.
  • Harvard will be at the one-day Terrier Invitational after coming in 12th place a year ago. Returning this season from that entry are Olivia Hogan-Lopez and Mignone, who represented the Crimson in the A-division. Hogan-Lopez and Mignone turned in three top-10 performances en route to a final score of 65. When the water settled, the Crimson turned in a regatta total of 139.

Up Next

Harvard will have next weekend off before Sophia Montgomery (women's), Kate Danielson (women's) and Robby Meek (open) travel to Norfolk, Virginia, to compete at the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships. The two-day event is scheduled for Nov. 8-9.
