Five Crimson Earn All-Ivy League Nods as Cross Country Concludes the 2025 Ivy League Heptagonal Cross Country Championships

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Harvard cross country kicked off the postseason in New York City with the 2025 Ivy League Heptagonal Cross Country Championships, as both Crimson squads took spots in the top-five in the team standings at Van Cortlandt Park.

In the men's 8k race, Harvard finished in second place with 46 points, powered by three Crimson placing in the top 10. In his Heps debut, first-year Tam Gavenas was superb, as the Andover, Massachusetts native finished in second place with a time of 24:14.4 to earn All-Ivy League First Team recognition. Juniors Charlie Ortmans and Sam Burgess also garnered All-Ivy League First Team honors, as Ortmans finished in fourth while Burgess placed in sixth.

The women's 6k race saw Harvard end the day in fifth place with 112 points, led by top-10 showings from senior Molly Malague and junior Sophia Gorriaran. For a second-straight year, Malague is an All-Ivy League First Team selection, as the Metuchen, New Jersey native finished in third place with a time of 20:58.9. A multiple time All-American in both the indoor and outdoor 800m in track & field, Gorriaran is an All-Ivy League First Team honoree for the first time in her cross country career, as Gorriaran finished in sixth place to earn the honor.

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Propelled by a trio of top seven performances, Harvard finished in second place in the men's 8k race with 46 points, only 14 points off first place Princeton.
  • Gavenas was stellar in his first run at Heps, as the Andover, Massachusetts native led Harvard's scoring effort with a second place finish, finishing the race in 24:14.4.
  • Harvard's team captains, Ortmans and Burgess, produced big runs to push Harvard up the team leaderboard. A native of Arlington, Virginia, Ortmans finished in fourth with a time of 24:20.6, earning All-Ivy League First Team recognition for the first time in his Crimson tenure. An All-Ivy League Second Team selection last year, Burgess improved on his performance from last year, this time finishing in sixth place after running a 24:26.6.
  • First-year Benjamin Bouie, another Crimson making their Heps debut today, added to Harvard's tally, finishing in 16th place after running a 25:01.2. Junior Ferenc Kovacs concluded Harvard's scoring efforts, finishing in 21st with a time of 25:17.8.
  • For the third time this season, Malague led the Harvard scoring charge with the top Crimson individual performance, as the Crimson finished in fifth place in the women's 6k with 112 points at Van Cortlandt Park.
  • An All-Ivy League First Team honoree last year, Malague made it two years in a row in earning All-Ivy League First Team status, finishing in third with a time of 20:58.9.
  • In her third Heps showing, Gorriaran enjoyed a career day in cross country competition, earning All-Ivy League First Team honors for the first time after finishing in sixth place with a time of 21:15.6.
  • Sophomore Abigail Sadler helped the Crimson's scoring efforts by taking 18th place after ending the run with a time of 21:52.4.
  • Two more Crimson finished in the top 50 to end Harvard's scoring in the women's 6k race at Van Cortlandt Park. First-year Dylan McElhinney finished in 41st place with a time of 22:24.0 while sophomore Katelyn Matarese ran a 22:38.7 to finish in 50th place.
