HANOVER, N.H. – Harvard Men's Swimming and Diving stayed perfect on the season and opened its Ivy League slate with a pair of victories on Friday afternoon in The Granite State. The Crimson defeated the hosts, Dartmouth, 217-82, and took down Cornell, 215-85. With the two wins, Harvard improved to 3-0 (2-0 Ivy). The Big Green dropped to 0-4 (0-4 Ivy), while the Big Red moved to 1-1 (1-1 Ivy).
How it Happened
- Harvard opened the swimming events by capturing the first two of the afternoon. Adriano Arioti, Joshua Chen, Sonny Wang and Marre Gattnar won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:27.23. William Mulgrew then won the 1,000 free, completing the race in 8:55.74, which was nearly five seconds better than runner-up and first-year classmate Pablo Martinez (9:00.64).
- After Cornell's Pietro Ubertalli won the 200 free by 0:00.02 over David Greeley (1:36.27), the Crimson rattled off 10 consecutive victories, with the first two coming from half of its 200 medley relay. Arioti emerged victorious in the 100 back with a 47.68 performance and Chen secured the W in the 100 breast (pool-record 53.76), winning by more than one second over Cornell's Haihan Xu (54.78).
- The Crimson went 1-2 in the next two events – the 200 fly and 50 free. David Schmitt posted a pool-record time of 1:44.14 to win the event, while teammate Ognjen Pilipovic came in second with what would have been a pool record time of 1:45.37. Wang and Gattnar, meanwhile, took the top two spots in the 50 free, posting times of 19.82 and 20.10, respectively.
- Raphael Tourette won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 348.60. The victory came on the heels of a runner-up performance on the 3-meter board (333.55), which was the first event of the day.
- Greeley, Arioti and Chen finished ahead of the pack in each of their events as the afternoon turned to night. Greeley won the 100 free in 44.35, Arioti was first in the 200 back (1:44.17) and Chen outpaced the 200-breast field with a pool-record 1:57.65.
- First-years Martinez and Maro Miknic put the finishing touches on Harvard's 10-event winning streak as they captured the 500 free and 100 fly, respectively. Martinez registered a facility-record 4:22.60, as did runner-up Pilipovic (4:24.48). Miknic followed suit with a pool-best 46.65, to lead a Harvard contingent that finished 1-2-3-4 (Miknic, Schmitt – 47.16, Wang – 47.31, Baffico – 48.00).
- Harvard put the final touches on its second road trip of the season with a win in the 200 free relay. Wang, Gattnar, Evan Croley and Greeley paced the field with a pool-record time of 1:19.04.
