Men’s Swimming and Diving Opens Season Friday at UMass

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Men's Swimming and Diving opens its season on Friday when it competes at UMass. The action in Amherst is set to begin at 6 p.m.

What to Know

  • Harvard enters its lidlifter coming off a 2024-25 season that saw it finish 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the Ivy League. The Crimson also finished in second place at the Ivy League Championships, falling short of its eighth straight conference title.
  • Harvard returns several of its All-Ivy performers from a season ago. Back this year from that group are second-team selections Sonny Wang (50 free, 100 fly) and David Schmitt (200 fly) along with the entire 400 free relay (Wang, Marre Gattnar, David Greeley, Evan Croley). The Crimson also returns three-fourths of its 200 free relay (Wang, Gattnar, Greeley) and 200 medley relay (Joshua Chen, Wang, Gattnar).
  • Harvard had three of its relays compete at the 2024 NCAA Championships (200 free, 400 free, 800 free), with Schmitt appearing as an individual (100 fly, 200 fly). Each of the Crimson athletes who competed at nationals are all back this season (Schmitt, Wang, Gattnar, Greeley, Croley).
  • The Crimson enters the season as a top-25 candidate in the CSCAA poll, having received four votes in the October poll. Based on point total, it is effectively No. 28 in the country.
  • Harvard, which will be led by team captains David Greeley, David Schmitt and Raphael Tourette, has won on opening day four straight years. In those seasons, the Crimson swept both Dartmouth and Cornell. This year marks the first campaign Harvard has not opened with the Big Green and Big Red since 2019-20, when it faced Duke and No. 7 Texas A&M.
  • Friday's matchup with the Minutemen will mark the first between the two schools.
  • UMass, meanwhile, is 0-1 on the season, falling to Boston College on the road, 197-99. The Minutemen, however, won the Justin Jennings Invitational at Colgate (Oct. 10-11).
  • Harvard competed in a scrimmage on Oct. 24, at MIT and won, 216-79. The Crimson took first place in 15 of 16 events.
