Men's Hockey Opens ECAC Play with Cornell and Colgate

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Men's hockey is set to begin its ECAC schedule this weekend, hosting Cornell and Colgate at Bright-Landry.

PUCK DROP

  • Closing a busy opening week, the Crimson will end its slate of four games in eight days with two games this weekend.
  • It's the first back-to-back of the season, both puck drops are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Six different Crimson found the back of the net in a 6-2 win over Stonehill on Tuesday night.
  • Starting fast, Harvard picked up its first win of the season after a four-goal first period.
  • Ben MacDonald, Marek Hejduk, Philip Tresca, Casey Severo, Mick Thompson, and Aidan Lane all found the back of the net.
  • Ben Charette stopped 34 of 36 shots in the win.
  • Matthew Morden picked up an assist on the Lane goal as the junior defenseman has points in back-to-back games for the first time in his career.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Harvard trails the career series with the Big Red 71-83-14.
  • The Crimson leads the all-time series with the Raiders 61-29-10.

LOOKING BACK

  • The Crimson went 1-2-1 against the Raiders and Big Red last season.
  • Last January, Harvard defeated Colgate 4-1 in its last meeting with four different Crimson finding the back of the net for just the second loss on home ice for the Raiders at that point in the season.
  • The only Crimson point against the nationally ranked Big Red came at Bright-Landry when it took Cornell to a shootout.

  • The line of Philip Tresca, Casey Severo, and Mick Thompson has been extremely efficient since becoming a line late last season.
  • Becoming a trio in the 25th game of the season last year, the first line has produced 34 points across the final 10 games of the season.
  • To open the season, the line has 6 points combined in two games, making that 40 points over their last 12 games.
  • Including the exhibition matchup against Northeastern, they have 47 points in their last 13 games.
  • Since February 14 of last season, Mick Thompson leads the conference in points per game with 18 points in 12 games (1.50), Casey Severo ranks third with 13 points in 12 games (1.08), and Philip Tresca ranks ninth with nine points in 12 games (0.75)
MICKY THREES
  • Mick Thompson recorded the fifth three-point game of his career on Tuesday against Stonehill.
  • The Ontario native has all five three-point games within his last 12 games.
  • Since 2002-03, Mick Thompson ranks 8th among Crimson skaters who have recorded multiple three-point games through just 35 career games.
  • Those in front of him are Adam Fox (97 career games), Casey Dornbach (131 career games), Sean Malone (115 career games), current Crimson forward Joe Miller, Sean Farrell (58 career games), Nick Abruzzese (59 career games), and Tyler Moy (131 career games).

FIRST-YEAR FRENZY

  • First-year defenseman Drake Murray added two assists for his first career points.
  • Murray is the first rookie blueliner with a two-point night since Ryan Healey in 2022.
  • Four rookies recorded points, with Lane and Murray earning their first career points.
  • Through two games, Heikki Ruohonen, Drake Murray, Aidan Lane, and Richard Gallant have combined for two goals and four assists.

SHUT DOWN CHEVY

  • Ben Charette has been lights out to start the season for the Crimson.
  • Charette has stopped 70 of 73 shots to start the season.

BENNY OPENING BRIGHT

  • Ben MacDonald scored his first goal of the season to open the game against Stonehill on Tuesday off a tap-in feed from Joe Miller.
  • The sophomore has scored the first goal of the hockey season at Bright-Landry for the second consecutive year.
  • In his three years in a Crimson uniform, he has been involved in all three goals to open the season after assisting on Ryan Fine's goal to open the 23-24 season.

RICKY ON THE SPOT

  • Richard Gallant netted his first career goal in his first career game in the season opener against UConn.
  • Knotting the game at one apiece, Gallant became the first rookie to score in his first collegiate game since Matt Coronato in 2021.
  • Assisted by Heikki Ruohonen, it was also the first time since 2017 that two first-years have recorded their first career points on the same play on opening night (Jack Badini and Henry Bowlby).

CHEVY SHOWCASE

  • Allowing one goal on 36 shots, the ECAC Preseason All-League netminder was stellar for the Crimson against UConn.
  • Tying a career high in saves, Charette helped keep the Crimson in the game in the early goings.
  • Charette made 36 saves in a loss to Clarkson last December.
  • Including the seven shootout stops, Charette unofficially made 43 saves on 47 shots.
OPENING WITH A MARATHON
  • For the second time in three seasons, the Crimson have started the season with a 1-1 tie.
  • Harvard and the Huskies traded blows in a 10-round shootout on Friday.
  • In 2023-24, Harvard defeated Dartmouth in the season opener after an 18-round shootout.
  • Then senior netminder Derek Mullahy made 25 saves in regulation before another 18 stops in the shootout.
  • In the last three seasons, Harvard has played a total of 28 shootout rounds in its first game of the season.

A FINAL SHOW

  • Harvard played just one preseason game ahead of the season opener, traveling to historic Matthews Arena for the final time.
  • Once home to the Crimson, Harvard went 10-4 at Matthews Arena dating back to 1963.
  • The Crimson overcame a 2-1 third-period deficit to beat the Huskies with third-period goals from Cameron Johnson and Philip Tresca.
CHASING HISTORY
  • Ted Donato sits just six wins away from becoming the program's all-time win leader, passing his former coach Bill Cleary.
  • Donato passed Ralph "Cooney" Weiland for second all-time in program history after the opening-round playoff win against RPI last season.
  • Donato is currently 49th all-time in NCAA history in career victories, with only ten active coaches having more wins than the long-time leader of the Crimson.

LEADERSHIP GROUP

  • Mason Langenbrunner and Joe Miller were named the 140th and 141st captains in program history at the conclusion of last season.
  • Langenbrunner had a career season on the blue line, netting six goals and adding four assists in 33 games.
  • A Boston Bruins draft pick, he scored twice at TD Garden against Northeastern in the Beanpot and was a two-time ECAC Defenseman of the Week.
  • Having played 99 career games, Langenbrunner is set to become the 43rd defenseman in the last 45 seasons to reach 100+ career games.
  • Miller has been an offensive force for the Crimson, tallying 31 goals and 47 assists for a total of 77 points over 93 career games, and is just the 10th Crimson forward in the last decade to surpass 75 career points.
  • Named Ivy League Rookie of the Year in 2022-23, Miller earned All-Ivy First Team and ECAC Third Team honors as a sophomore, finishing with 13 goals and 14 assists in 32 games.
  • He was selected in the sixth round of the NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

CHEVY'S NET

  • Sophomore goaltender Ben Charette has been named to the ECAC Hockey Preseason All-League Team.
  • Poised to take over as Harvard's starting netminder this season, Charette earned ECAC All-Rookie Team honors a year ago.
  • He led all ECAC goaltenders with at least 10 games played in save percentage, posting a .926 mark in 10 conference contests.
  • Charette recorded his first career shutout with a 31-save effort against St. Lawrence in December and averaged 28 saves per game in his debut season in Cambridge.
  • He finished the year with a 2.25 goals-against average and three wins, becoming the first Crimson goaltender to make the All-Rookie Team since Mitchell Gibson in 2019-20.
  • Charette was also named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List last January.
  • He made his collegiate debut in a non-conference matchup against Notre Dame at the Friendship Four before starting the next six games for the Crimson.

CAREER CRIMSON

  • All six seniors this season are set to play more than 100 career games in a Crimson uniform.
  • Mason Langenbrunner skated in his 100th career game in the home opener against Stonehill.
  • Last season, the Crimson had four seniors reach 100 career games, the most since 2017-18.
  • Ryan Healey (98), Joe Miller (95), Casey Severo (94), Marek Hejduk (94), and Philip Tresca (83) are on pace to break the 100-game milestone.

MICK MEANS BUSINESS

  • The reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Mick Thompson returns for the Crimson this season looking to improve on what was already an incredible rookie campaign.
  • A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Thompson was named National Rookie of the Month for February last season while also landing on the ECAC All-Rookie

CLUTCH CASEY

  • In 2023-24, seven of Severo's eight goals had either narrowed the deficit to one, tied the game, or given the Crimson the lead.
  • In 2024-25, 10 of his 16 goals either tied the game or gave the Crimson the lead while two others pushed the Crimson lead to two.
  • In his past two seasons, 17 of his 24 goals have either narrowed the deficit to one, tied the game, or given the Crimson the lead.

JUMBO JOE MILLER

  • Miller enters the season with 78 points in 93 career games, which is good for second in the conference over that time among active skaters.
  • Second in goals and fourth in assists, Miller is third in points per game among active ECAC players entering the season (.839).

AMONG THE NATION'S BEST RETURNERS

  • Seniors Ryan Healey and Joe Miller are among the top returners in the nation this season.
  • Miller's 78 points is 14th in the nation among returning players while slotting in at No. 8 in points per game among the same group.
  • Ryan Healey checks in at No. 9 in goals among returning defensemen with 15 goals in 96 games.

BIG AND TALL

  • Despite being the fourth youngest team in the country, the Crimson is the sixth biggest team and seventh heaviest team in the nation.
  • Last season, Harvard was not ranked in either category.
