Skiing Closes Out UNH Carnival, NCAA Regional Championships

FRANCONIA, N.H. and JACKSON, N.H. – Men's alpine finished the weekend with five top-30 finishes, and senior Quincy Donley led women's nordic with a pair of top-20 finishes on the weekend as Harvard University skiing closed out the second and final day of the University of New Hampshire Carnival and NCAA Regional Championships on Saturday.
 
In alpine action at Mittersill, the Crimson totaled five top-30 finishes on the men's side, including three top-30s in men's slalom on Saturday and two top-30s in men's giant slalom on Friday. On Friday in men's giant slalom, first-year Duncan Armstrong (eighth) and junior Luke Kearing (25th) paced the Crimson, while on Saturday in men's slalom, Armstrong (22nd), senior Matt Ryan (23rd), and Kearing (27th) all came in the top 30 behind quality efforts to achieve the fastest times possible.
 
With the EISA season complete, Armstrong stands in an NCAA qualifying position with the NCAA set to announce official selections for the championship on Tuesday, Feb. 25, while Kearing came in just outside a qualifying spot.
 
In nordic competition at Jackson XC, Donley paced the Crimson for the second straight day, notching a 19th-place finish in the women's 15k freestyle one day after coming in 20th in the women's 7.5k classic. She closed the EISA season with eight top-20 finishes. First-year Bennett Hutchison led the men's side with a 21st-place finish in the men's 15k freestyle.
 
On the coaching side, Harvard alpine assistant coach Cameron Ciccone earned a nomination for the EISA Coach of the Year.
 
In the team standings, Harvard placed 10th out of 14 EISA schools with 314 points. 

Harvard Highlights: Alpine Day 2

  • First-year Duncan Armstrong led Harvard with a 22nd place finish in men's slalom, including a 10th-place effort in run one, notching a 1:30.26 (45.27 run one, 44.99 run two) for 22 EISA points and nine NCAA points. He registered his 10th top-30 finish on the year.
  • Senior Matt Ryan posted his sixth top-30 finish on the year with a 23rd-place showing in men's slalom behind a time of 1:30.28 (45.73 run one, 44.55 run two) – just 0.02 seconds behind Armstrong. He charted 21 EISA points and eight NCAA points on the day.
  • Junior Luke Kearing recorded his sixth top-30 finish on the year – including his fifth straight such effort – behind a 27th-place finish in men's slalom. He closed with a 1:30.98 (46.11 run one, 44.87 run two) for 18 EISA points and four NCAA points.
  • The Crimson's men's contingent came in sixth place as a team in the men's slalom with 61 points, trailing fifth-place Colby (62 points) by just one point.
  • Harvard's men's side tallied five top-30 finishes on the weekend with three in slalom and two in giant slalom. 

Harvard Highlights: Nordic Day 2

  • Senior Quincy Donley notched her eighth top-20 finish of the season and second top-20 showing of the weekend as she came in 19th place in the women's 15k freestyle behind a time of 40:16.5 for 24 EISA points and 12 NCAA points.
  • First-year Bennett Hutchison led the men's side with a 21st-place finish in the men's 15k freestyle, clocking a 36:22.7 for 22 EISA points and 10 NCAA points. He tallied his third top-30 finish on the season.
  • Sophomore Breagh Bridge placed a season-best 23rd in the women's 15k freestyle, posting her fourth top-30 effort of the year and third straight such showing. She posted a 41:14.6 for 22 EISA points and eight NCAA points.
  • Sophomore Clara Lake added a 31st-place finish in the women's 15k freestyle in 42:12.9, collecting 16 EISA points. 

Harvard Highlights: Alpine Day 1

  • First-year Duncan Armstrong paced the Crimson with an eighth-place finish in men's giant slalom, posting his seventh top-10 effort on the year. Armstrong finished fifth in run one, clocked a 2:14.56 (1:09.28 run one, 1:05.28 run two) for 33 EISA points as well as 32 NCAA points, and registered his ninth top-30 showing on the season.
  • Junior Luke Kearing came in 25th in the men's giant slalom, recording his fifth top-30 finish on the season. He charted a 2:17.41 (1:12.10 run one, 1:05.31 run two), including a 19th-place effort in run two, for 17 EISA points and six NCAA points.
  • Harvard's men's contingent came in sixth place as a team in the men's giant slalom with 65 points, trailing fifth-place St. Lawrence (66 points) by just one point.

  • Senior Quincy Donley led the Crimson with a 20th-place finish in the women's 7.5 classic, clocking a 23:06.70 for 24 EISA points and 11 NCAA points. She tallied her seventh top-20 finish of the season.
  • Sophomore Clara Lake placed a season-best 27th in the women's 7.5k classic behind a 23:49.10 for 19 EISA points and four NCAA points.
  • Sophomore Breagh Bridge posted her third top-30 finish of the season, coming in 29th in the women's 7.5k classic with a 23:56.20 for 18 EISA points and two NCAA points.
  • Harvard's women's contingent came in sixth place as a team in the women's 7.5k classic with 61 points.

Next Up

Harvard will look to send representatives to the NCAA Championships hosted by Dartmouth College from March 5-8 with alpine events at the Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme Center, New Hampshire and nordic events at Oak Hill in Hanover, New Hampshire. The championship's schedule of events will include giant slalom on March 5, the 7.5k classic on March 6, slalom on March 7, and the 20k freestyle on March 8.  The NCAA will announce selections for the championship on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
