CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Women's Basketball senior guard
Harmoni Turner has been named the AP Player of the Week, it was announced today. The national honor comes on the heels of the Crimson capturing the Ivy League Tournament title and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
A native of Mansfield, Texas, Turner averaged 34.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals, while shooting 48.9 percent from the floor, 55.6 percent from three-point distance and 85.7 percent from the charity stripe.
In Harvard's 70-67 Ivy Madness semifinal win over second-seeded Princeton, Turner exploded for a career-high 44 points (14-27 FG, 7-11 3FG, 9-10 FT) to go with seven rebounds, two assists, one blocked shot and one steal. The guard's 44 points set a new single-game school record, and established a new scoring standard at Pizzitola Sports Center (Providence, R.I.) and for the Ivy Tournament. Turner's seven triples, meanwhile, were also a venue and conference tournament record.
The next evening in the Ivy championship game vs. top-seeded Columbia, Turner poured in 24 points (9-20 FG, 3-7 3FG, 3-4 FT), grabbed a pair of rebounds, dished four assists and was a threat in the passing lanes with four steals. The Crimson emerged a 74-71 victory with Turner being named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
With the two neutral-court victories at Brown, Harvard secured its first Ivy League tournament crown and first NCAA bid since 2007. On Sunday, the Crimson learned it earned a 10-seed in Region 1 – Spokane and will face the seventh-seeded Michigan State Spartans on Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Tip-off in Raleigh, North Carolina, is set for 4:30 p.m. ET.
