ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Harvard Sailing finished in fifth place at a weather-shortened ICSA Open Fleet Race National Championship on Friday. The event, which was limited to only one day of finals racing due to a lack of wind on Thursday, featured just seven races and saw the Crimson finish with a score of 107.
Harvard, which entered the regatta as the defending champions, finished behind Stanford (58), Navy (74), Dartmouth (91), and Yale (98).
The day started off on a good note as the A-Division duo of
Justin Callahan and
Kennedy Leehealey opened with a three-race-finish line of 3-5-7, while B-Division sailors
Mitchell Callahan and
Rosella Irfan notched a 2-7-5.
Race 4 proved costly for Harvard as J. Callahan-Leehealey finished in 15
th place. The duo rebounded with a seventh- and fourth-place performance in the next two races before coming in 11
th in Race 7 to end its day.
M. Callahan-Irfan, meanwhile, continued to put up solid results after their three-race start, going 9-3 in Races 4-5. The final two competitions of the day, however, ended in 11
th- and 18
th-place finishes.
Despite falling short in its bid to repeat as champions, the Crimson has finished in the top five at three straight fleet race nationals, coming in third in 2023 and winning it all in 2024, before this season's result. Harvard had not posted three consecutive top-5 finishes since doing so in 2010 (2
nd), 2011 (3
rd) and 2012 (5
th).
As a program, Spring 2025 was highly successful as the Crimson won the ICSA Open Team Race National Championship, while coming in third place at both the ICSA Women's Team Race and Women's Fleet Race. Harvard's showing at the Women's Team Race was its top performance in school history and its effort at Fleet Race Nationals was its best finish since 2019.
