Men's Heavyweight Rowing

Season Recap: 2025 Harvard Men's Heavyweights

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The 2025 season was a milestone year for Harvard Men's Heavyweight Rowing. Led by Charley Butt in his 40th season at Harvard—and 12th as head coach of the heavyweight program—the Crimson entered the spring with experience, momentum, and high expectations. Coming off a strong finish the previous year, the team returned determined to push each boat to a new level of performance.

The season began with a marquee matchup against top-ranked Washington. Though Harvard fell in a hard-fought dual, the close racing signaled that the Crimson were ready to contend with the best. That potential was confirmed at the Sarasota Invitational, where the first varsity placed third, the second varsity earned silver, and the third varsity took first—an encouraging showing across all lineups.

From there, Harvard launched into a dominant stretch, picking up road wins over Cornell and Princeton, followed by a pair of home victories against Penn and Navy. The Crimson continued its streak by defeating Boston rival Northeastern.

Momentum carried into the Eastern Sprints, where Harvard delivered one of its best all-around performances in over a decade. The first varsity captured gold for the first time since 2014, while the second and third varsity boats also won its events. The fourth varsity added a silver to cap off the team's commanding presence.

At the IRA National Championships, Harvard again proved its consistency on the national stage. The first and second varsity eights both earned silver medals, while the third varsity secured a national title with a dominant performance.

The season concluded in historic fashion as Harvard swept the 158th edition of the Harvard-Yale Regatta, putting an exclamation point on a campaign defined by excellence, depth, and resilience.
