NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Harvard Sailing rising senior
Justin Callahan, rising sophomore
Harrison Strom and Oliver Lloyd finished in second place at the 58th Governor's Cup at Balboa Yacht Club.
Callahan skippered the trio to the semifinals after an impressive showing in the head-to-head match-ups over the first three days of the regatta. Callahan and Strom were instrumental in the team breaking a 6-0 first-place tie with Cole Tapper of Australia on the second day of action after they rattled off another six victories. Day 3 saw the group pull away, improving to 20-2, a full two wins better than Josh Hyde of New Zealand.
Callahan's undefeated run came to an end in the semifinals, falling to fellow American Morgan Pinckney. The threesome avenged the loss later in the day en route to a 3-1 series victory, propelling it to the finals.
On the fifth and last day of the regatta, Callahan split the first two championship races only to have Tapper secure his second straight Governor's Cup with wins in Races 3 and 4.
There were 12 teams from six countries competing in the 58th year of the Governor's Cup, which featured a double round-robin. The top four teams advanced to a head-to-head semifinal round.
The Governor's Cup, first raced in 1967, is the oldest and most prestigious youth match racing championship in the world.
