Men’s Basketball’s Hinton Helps Chinese Taipei Move into Knockout Stage of FIBA Asia Cup

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia – Harvard Men's Basketball rising sophomore guard Robert Hinton has helped Chinese Taipei move into the knockout stage of the FIBA Asia Cup – the continental basketball championship of Asia and Oceania – finishing in second place in Group D with two wins over three games at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
 
Making his debut in a FIBA event, Hinton posted 14.3 points per game, a 45.2 field goal percentage, 55.6 3-point percentage, and 76.9 free throw percentage during the group stage and helped Chinese Taipei earn wins over the Philippines, 95-87, on Aug. 5 and Iraq, 87-60, on Aug. 7 before falling against New Zealand, 118-78, on Aug. 9.
 
The FIBA Asia Cup – the highest level of competition for national teams from Asia and Oceania outside the Olympics and World Cup – continues with the play-in round (Aug. 11-12), quarterfinals (Aug. 13-14), semifinals (Aug. 16), and finals (Aug. 17). Chinese Taipei will meet Jordan in the play-in round on Aug. 11 at 7:00 a.m. ET.
 
Hinton opened Asia Cup with 14 points and four rebounds, while hitting 5-of-10 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws, in the win over the Philippines before adding five points and three boards in the victory over Iraq. He scored a team-high 24 points on 7-of-13 field goals, 4-of-5 treys, and 6-of-7 free throws against New Zealand.
 
Over 11 games played for Chinese Taipei this summer across the Jones Cup and Asia Cup, Hinton has averaged 13.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 45.8 percent from the field, 37.9 percent from 3-point range, and 83.3 percent from the foul line.
 
Earlier this summer, Hinton helped Team Taiwan earn a silver medal at the 44th William Jones Cup in New Taipei City, Taiwan. Hinton earned First Team All-Jones Cup and helped the team post a 7-1 record over eight games in nine days from July 12-20. Hinton averaged 13.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.0 steals per game, while shooting 46.0 percent from the field and 87.0 percent from the free throw line.
 
During his first season at Harvard in 2024-25, Hinton earned Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors unanimously, captured Ivy League Rookie of the Week eight times, and won the team's Raymond P. Lavietes Most Valuable Player Award. Hinton averaged 14.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.3 steals, and 30.0 minutes per game, while scoring in double figures 19 times in 27 games. He shot 47.7 percent from the field, 35.6 percent from 3-point distance, and 76.3 percent from the free throw line.
 
Harvard is set to open its 2025-26 season against MIT on Friday, Nov. 7 at 5:00 p.m. (ESPN+) following an exhibition contest at Providence College (Oct. 25).
