CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard men's basketball will hit the road this weekend as it continues its Ivy League schedule with a pair of contests against Brown and Yale. The Crimson will first head to Providence to battle Brown on Friday night (Jan. 30) before heading down to New haven to take on Yale on Saturday (Jan. 31). Both games will tip off at 7:00 PM and will air live on ESPN+.
What to Know
- Harvard enters the weekend with a 10-9 record and a 3-2 mark in Ivy League play. It's mark in conference action has the Crimson tied for second in the conference with Dartmouth and Princeton and is just one game behind the league-leader, Yale.
- The Crimson is coming off a narrow loss to Ivy League foe, Cornell which occurred last Saturday (Jan. 24). Harvard put together a 21-9 run in the second half to briefly retake the lead late in the contest, but Cornell battled back to score the final eight points of regulation and earn an 86-79 victory.
- Sophomore Robert Hinton, facing off against his brother Adam, led the way for the Harvard (10-9, 3-2 Ivy League), recording team-highs in both points (19) and rebounds (6) against the Big Red.
- Two more Crimson also finished in double-figures in the clash with Cornell (9-9, 2-3), as sophomore guard Tey Barbour recorded 18 points, while junior forward Thomas Batties II scored 14 points.
- Off the bench, first-year guard Frankie Mannino made an impact, as the first-year guard recorded a career-high 11 points, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.
- The Crimson used a three-game winning streak in conference play to work its way to the top of the standings. The run started with a road win against Columbia (Jan. 10) before a weekend sweep of Princeton (Jan. 17) and Penn (Jan. 19)
- Against Princeton on Jan. 17, the Crimson faced a 17-point deficit with 7:37 left in regulation but Harvard orchestrated a remarkable 20-0 run to turn the tide against the Tigers, as the Crimson pulled off an 87-80 win in overtime to keep its winning streak alive. Two 20-point scorers highlighted the Crimson's offensive output, as sophomore Robert Hinton led the way with 27 points. Senior and team captain Chandler Piggé also recorded 21 points, a season-high in Ivy League action for the Houston, Texas native.
- During The Thomas G. Stemberg '71 Endowed Coach for Harvard men's basketball Tommy Amaker's tenure, Harvard is now 29-6 all-time in overtime contests.
- The 17-point comeback was also the fourth largest come from behind victory of the Amaker-era.
- In a back-and-forth physical battle against Penn on Jan. 19, the Crimson prevailed in a dramatic 64-63 tilt against the Quakers. Sophomore Tey Barbour and junior Thomas Batties II combined for 34 points, tallying 17 each, as the Crimson defense caused 11 turnovers and scored 15 points off turnovers. Harvard is now 3-1 in games decided by three points or less this season.
- Hinton is leading all Crimson in scoring this season, tallying 16.5 points per game to go along with 4.8 rebounds per game. Among the Ivy League, Hinton currently ranks seventh in points per game and third in scoring with 313 points. A native of Los Angeles, California, Hinton has tallied double-digit points 15 times this season, scoring 20 or more points on five occasions this year.
- Piggé is enjoying a career year in his final season with the Crimson, averaging a career-high 13.4 points per game, ranking 11th in the Ivy League in the category. Defensively, Piggé is also excelling, ranking second in the Ancient Eight in steals per game (1.6).
- Barbour is averaging 12.3 points per game this season to go along with 4.9 rebounds per game. A native of Manassas, Virginia, Barbour is second on the Crimson in three-point field goal percentage (.402) this season. In the Ivy League, Barbour ranks third in three-point field goal makes (47) as well.
- Batties is finding success beyond the three-point arc, holding second place in the Ivy League for three-point field goal percentage (0.535). A native of Washington, D.C. and the recipient of the team's Hamilton Fish '10 Most Improved Player Award last year, Batties is averaging 12.5 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game.
- As a team, the Crimson is one of the best defensive sides in the Ivy League, ranking second in the Ancient Eight in points allowed per game (69.3) and second in turnovers forced (221).
- Brown holds a 7-11 record this season and a 1-4 mark in Ivy action. Harvard leads the all-time series with Brown, 107-80, and owns a 23-11 record against the Bears under Amaker. The Crimson also owns a 12-6 record at the Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence with Amaker at the helm.
- The Ivy League leading Yale Bulldogs boast a 15-3 record and a 4-1 mark in Ivy League action heading into the weekend. The Crimson trails 85-126 in the all-time series against the Bulldogs. Although, under Amaker Harvard holds a 20-17 mark against the Ancient Eight rival including a 10-7 mark at the John J. Lee Amphitheater in New Haven.
- Junior guard Xavier Nesbitt has earned selection as a nominee for the Allstate NACDA Winter Good Works Team. Nesbitt garnered the recognition for going above and beyond in his commitment to community service, academic achievement, and athletic performance. Through Harvard's existing relationship with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston and a fellowship with The Team, a nonpartisan civic engagement organization, Nesbitt organized a basketball clinic and civic engagement talk at the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club during the 2024–25 academic year.
