Don Sweeney ’88, Team Canada Set to Begin Olympic Action Today

Former Crimson standout and current Boston Bruins General Manager and Assistant General Manager for Team Canada's Olympic team — Don Sweeney '88 and the Canadians are set to begin round robin play at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. Canada opens tournament action against Czechia this morning at 10:40 a.m.

This marks the first Olympic best-on-best tournament since 2014. Sweeney and Team Canada will look to capture their third straight Olympic gold medal with NHL talent, following gold medal performances in 2010 and 2014.

The New Brunswick native also served on Canada's front office staff at last year's Four Nations Tournament, where the team captured the championship with an overtime victory over the United States at TD Garden.

Sweeney concluded his Harvard career as one of the most decorated defensemen in program history. A cornerstone on the blue line, he was a key contributor to three consecutive ECAC regular season championships and helped lead the Crimson to the 1987 ECAC Tournament title. He was part of Harvard teams that posted remarkable records of 18–3 (1986), 20–2 (1987), and 18–4 (1988), marking one of the most dominant stretches in program history.

Originally selected in the eighth round of the 1984 NHL Draft by the Boston Bruins, Sweeney went on to enjoy a distinguished professional career. He won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 1997 IIHF World Championship and appeared in more than 1,100 NHL games — including 1,051 with the Bruins.
