Gorriaran Ends Indoor Regular Season with Ivy League Athlete of the Week Honors

PRINCETON, N.J. – Following a historic showing in the women's 1000m at the Saucony Battle for Boston, junior Sophia Gorriaran is the Ivy League's Women's Athlete of the Week, becoming the first Crimson to win the honors multiple times this year.

A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Gorriaran set a new NCAA record in the women's 1000m with a time of 2:37.72, becoming the first student-athlete in NCAA history to go sub 2:38.00 in the event. Gorriaran is also the first Crimson in program history to hold two active NCAA records at the same time, as she helped the Crimson set a national record in the women's outdoor distance medley relay at the 2024 Penn Relays.

Once again, Gorriaran is one of the nation's top middle distance runners. A four-time All-American, Gorriaran ranks 10th in the 800m (2:01.30) and 21st in the mile (4:29.53). Gorriaran also leads the Ivy League in both events as well.

Harvard track & field embarks on the postseason this weekend at The Armory, competing at the 2026 Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, Mar. 1.
