Ortmans Wins 3000m Title as Track & Field Opens 2026 Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Track & Field Championships

NEW YORK, N.Y. – In the most thrilling and dramatic race on the opening day of the 2026 Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Track & Field Championships, junior Charlie Ortmans became the 14th student-athlete in program history to win the Ivy League title in the men's 3000m to highlight Harvard track & field's opening day of the postseason.

A native of Arlington, Virginia, Ortmans won the race with a time of 7:55.38, closing out a sizable gap in the last 200m, overtaking Princeton's Brian Boler in the final five meters of the race. One of Harvard's cross country team captains this academic year, Ortmans is an Ivy League champion for the first time in his Crimson tenure.

Two Crimson from the women's squad also earned All-Ivy League Second Team honors. Sophomore Ella McRitchie is now a two-time All-Ivy League selection in the women's pole vault, finishing in second place after clearing 4.18m (13'8.5"). Senior Molly Malague finished in second place in the women's 3000m, as her time of 9:09.28 ranks second all-time in program history, surpassing Jenny Stricker's '86 time of 9:09.49 from the 1983 Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships.

With the opening day of the 2026 Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships in the books, the men's team is in fifth place with 12 points with four events scored, while the women's team is in fourth with 23 points after five events scored.

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS
  • The journey at the 2026 Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships started with the men's weight throw, as first-year Daniel Ye advanced to the final in his Heps debut, finishing in eighth place with a throw of 17.60m (57'9") to finish in the top 10.
  • Another Heps debutante, first-year Yannick Kraus ended the day in third place in the men's heptathlon with 2986 points. Kraus started his time at The Armory with a 7.18 in the 60m, following that showing with distances of 7.03m (23'.75") in the long jump and 11.70m (38'4.75") in the shot put. Kraus wrapped the day clearing 1.95m (6'4.75") in the high jump. Kraus' mark in the long jump is a personal-best for the Dubai, United Arab Emirates native.
  • Action on the track started with both of Harvard's entries in the women's mile advancing to tomorrow's final, each of them winning their heat. First-year Dylan McElhinney ran the fastest time in the prelims, winning the first heat with a time of 4:44.47. The newly minted NCAA record holder in the women's 1000m, junior Sophia Gorriaran crossed the finish line first in the second and final heat of the prelims with a time of 4:46.64.
  • The men's 60 hurdles saw junior Simon Weiser punch his ticket to the finals on time, stopping the clock at 8.12.
  • Over in the women's 60 hurdles, sophomore Abigail Dennis matched her personal-best of 8.41 to advance to the finals, while the defending champion in the event and Crimson senior Fabiola Belibi also moved on with a time of 8.45.
  • Back in the field events, junior Marta Amani scored the women's team's first point of the weekend in the women's long jump, finishing in sixth place with a jump of 5.95m (19'6.25").
  • The school record holder in the men's 400m, first-year Arpad Kovacs takes the next step to tomorrow's final, finishing in fifth in the first round with a time of 47.76. Sophomore Hudson Allain took 11th place after running a 48.49.
  • A personal-best lifted senior and team captain Jacklynn Okereke to the women's 400m final, as Okereke's time of 55.08 ranks ninth all-time in school history.
  • Along with McRitchie's second place showing in the women's pole vault, junior Lilly Hodge finished in a tied for third place with a height of 4.08m (13'4.5") adding to Harvard's points tally.
  • Senior Justin Levy utilized a personal-best 1:03.17 to clinch a spot in the men's 500m final. Levy now ranks seventh all-time in program history in the event.
  • Another PR arrived over in the women's side of the 500m, as sophomore Kaelin Creagh finished in eighth in the prelims with a time of 1:13.94, a mark that ranks ninth all-time in school history.
  • A trio of Crimson secured spots in the men's 60m final. Junior Timi Esan led the way by matching his season-best mark of 6.73, while senior and team captain Jonas Clarke and junior Amari Turner advanced to the final as well with identical times of 6.81.
  • A career-day propelled sophomore Saige Forbes to the women's 60m final, as the Glen Mills, Pennsylvania native ran a 7.47, a new PR and a mark that is tied for eighth in school history. Junior Mickaila Haisley will join Forbes in the final after running a 7.50 in the prelims.
  • Gorriaran returned to the track for the women's 800m, securing a spot in another final with a time of 2:07.25.
  • First-year Grant Schroder took 10th in the men's 1000m with a time of 2:25.60. Fellow classmate Arashi Hunter joined Schroder in the top 15 with a time of 2:27.83.                                            
  • The women's 1000m saw first-year Callie Wallace finish in ninth place with a personal-best 2:51.23, while sophomore Abigail Sadler took 10th with a 2:51.83.
  • Along with Ortmans dramatic win in the men's 3000m, junior Sam Burgess also scored points in the 3k, finishing in fifth with a time of 8:01.41.
  • Esan and Turner will also run in the men's 200m final tomorrow along with their men's 60m final, as Turner ran a 21.14 in the prelims while Esan posted a season-best 21.34.
  • Sophomore Ella Cooper will represent the Crimson in the women's 200m final, as the Owings Mills, Maryland native recorded a 23.54 in the prelims.
  • Senior Michaela Denson scored the final points of the day in the women's weight throw, finishing in sixth with a throw of 17.86m (58'7.25").
