HANOVER, N.H – Harvard and Dartmouth
split an Ivy League doubleheader Saturday in Hanover, N.H.
Dartmouth won the first game by a 14-2 score to record its 20th win
in its last 22 games. The second game would be decided in extra
innings however as Harry Douglas tripled home two runs with two
outs in the 10th inning and Tom Stack-Babich threw 2.0 innings of
scoreless relief to give Harvard a 6-4 victory.
Dartmouth stands at 15-3 in the league following the games while
Harvard stands at 9-9.
In game two a resilient Crimson team sent the game into extra
innings against first place Dartmouth with a two-run rally in the
ninth against closer Ryan Smith to tie the game at 4-4.
Dillon O'Neill singled to lead off and come home on a ringing
double to right-center by Taylor Meehan. After Douglas dropped down
a bunt single, Tyler Albright sent a sacrifice fly to tie the
game.
In extra frames, Douglas answered once more in what has been a fine
season for the Crimson's captain when he took a 1-2 pitch
from Smith and sent a triple down the right field line to score
O'Neill (single) and Meehan (field's choice) and make
the score 6-4 in favor of the visitors.
Dartmouth's Jake Carlson, who entered as a pinch runner
earlier, led off the home half of the ninth with an infield single
but Tom Stack-Babich, on the mound from his right field position,
recorded three consecutive outs to keep the game going.
In a game that started as a pitcher's duel, Dartmouth put up
a three spot in the fifth inning highlighted by a two-run homer
from Mike Pagliarulo. Harvard's Matt Rogers matched the feat
in the sixth when he launched his ninth homer of the year to make
it a 3-2 game.
Dartmouth got a key run in the seventh as a one-out single and a
triple from Ray Allen gave the Big Green a 4-2 lead that it would
carry into the ninth.
Douglas, O'Neill, Meehan and Jeff Reynolds all had two hits
in the Crimson's 10-hit attack in game two. Dan Berardo threw
another scoreless inning out of the bullpen and has now allowed
just one run in his last 9.1 innings out of the pen.
In game one Harvard jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI
single from Douglas but Dartmouth tied the game on a leadoff walk
and a double. The Big Green put the seven-inning opener out of
reach with nine runs in the second inning started by another
leadoff walk and keyed by a three-run homer by Jonathan
Santopadre.
Douglas doubled home O'Neill (double) in the third inning to
account for Harvard's second run. Dartmouth added three runs
in the sixth, three of them being unearned to account for the final
tally.
In all Dartmouth out-hit the Crimson, 14-5, while hurler Robert
Young threw a complete-game, striking out five.
The teams return to O'Donnell Field Sunday to complete the
home-and-home doubleheaders. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
