BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – The Harvard
men's water polo team earned a split in its Collegiate Water polo
Association doubleheader in New York City Saturday, earning a 15-11
come-from-behind win against Queens (N.Y.) in the nightcap after
falling, 23-7, to No. 15 St. Francis (N.Y.) in the first game.
The Knights (6-8, 2-4 CWPA) got out ahead of Harvard (8-13, 2-4
CWPA), 5-3, in the first quarter, but the Crimson would score five
unanswered goals in the second frame to take an 8-5 lead into
halftime and never look back. Harvard was playing against Queens
(N.Y.) without its senior co-captain Bret Voith and
energetic freshman Neal O'Hara,
both of whom left the St. Francis (N.Y.) game with injuries.
"We played one of our best games of the season," said Harvard
head coach Ted Minnis "The overall team effort, honestly, we were
down Bret and Neal, and the guys really responded well, played as a
group and supported each other."
Junior co-captain Luka Babic
stepped up and notched five goals, an assist and a steal to lead
the way against the Knights. Backup goalie Jimmy Field
made 10 stops in goal, including shutting out Queens (N.Y) in the
second period to energize the comeback.
In the opener, No. 15 St. Francis (17-3, 6-0 CWPA) jumped on the
Crimson early in a physical game, taking a 6-2 lead after the first
stanza and pulling away from there. Junior Mike Katzer led
the team with two scores. Junior goalkeeper Alexandre
Popp had 13 saves.
Harvard continues its CWPA road trip Sunday in New London,
Conn., to take on Connecticut College at noon.
