CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-Freshmen Luke Greiner and
Danny Biega scored goals to cut Colgate's lead to one goal, but
Alex Evin made 15 third-period saves to lead the Raiders to a 4-2
win after an empty-net goal Saturday night in front of a sellout
Senior Night crowd at Bright Hockey Center.
Kyle Richter made 27 saves and logged an assist in two periods
of action after John Riley started Senior Night with a strong first
period in goal for Harvard (7-17-3, 7-10-3 ECAC Hockey). Riley and
fellow seniors Alex Biega, Jack Christian, Chad Morin, Doug Rogers
and Ian Tallett were honored in a ceremony following the game,
their final regular-season contest at home.
Alex Evin made 38 saves for the Raiders (13-13-6, 10-8-2), who
held a 42-40 shots edge. Ten of those shots came during Colgate's
five unsuccessful power plays. The Crimson was 1 for 3 with the man
advantage, as Danny Biega's tally cut the Raiders' third-period
lead to 3-2. Evin and the Raiders held on from there, with Ethan
Cox sealing the win on an empty-net goal with 2.7 seconds on the
clock.
Austin Smith gave Colgate the lead at 4:40 of the first period,
skating across the goalmouth and scoring on the backhand after a
pass from David McIntyre in the corner. Harvard, led by several
great moves by Alex Killorn that led to scoring chances, picked up
its offense after falling behind, but Evin stopped all 11 of the
Crimson's first-period shots. Riley had 11 saves.
Brian Day made it 2-0 at 4:26 of the second period, banging the
puck into the net after Richter stopped Robbie Bourdon's shot from
the left side. Greiner halved the lead in the middle of the period.
Richter poked the puck to Greiner, who exchanged passes with
Michael Del Mauro to start an odd-man rush, and Greiner finished by
roofing a shot over Evin's blocker. Richter allowed the game to go
to the intermission at 2-1 with several outstanding saves,
including a flurry of stops during a Colgate power play and
consecutive diving stops on Kevin McNamara and Smith.
For the second straight night, Harvard created its best offense
in the third period but came up short. Jason Williams gave the
Raiders a 3-1 edge at 10:40 of the third, stealing the puck in the
offensive zone and scoring unassisted. Danny Biega brought the
Crimson within one when he intercepted a Colgate clearing attempt
and beat Evin with a shot from the top of the circles through an
Alex Fallstrom screen.
