CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-Freshman forward Louis Leblanc
of the Harvard men's hockey team has been named Ivy League Rookie
of the Year and is one of three Crimson players to receive All-Ivy
League honorable mention, the Ivy office announced Thursday. Senior
defenseman Alex Biega and junior goaltender Kyle Richter were also
honored.
Leblanc, who leads the Crimson with 21 points and 11 goals, is
the 12th Harvard player to be named Rookie of the Year and the
first since Tim Pettit '04 in 2000â€'01. With 11
points and seven goals in Ivy games, he was the Ancient Eight's top
rookie scorer by a three-point margin.
The Kirkland, Que., native also had three more goals than the
league's second-leading freshman sniper, despite missing one of the
Crimson's 10 Ivy games with an injury. He owned a team-high +4
plus/minus rating in Ivy games.
Biega, Harvard's captain and one of its top defensemen, recorded
two goals, one on the power play, in Ivy League action. He added a
pair of assists and was +3. Biega, who hails from Montreal, Que.,
received recognition from the Ivy League for the third straight
season. He was a first-team selection last season after earning
honorable mention as a sophomore.
Richter stopped 121 of the 131 shots he faced in Ivy play, good
for a league-leading .924 save percentage. A native of Calgary,
Alta., he ranked second in the Ivy League with a 2.48 goals-against
average in league play. It is his second All-Ivy honor; he was a
first-team pick in 2007-08.
Harvard begins its postseason by visiting Ivy rival Princeton
this weekend for a best-of-three series in the first round of the
ECAC Hockey playoffs.
