PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore pitcher Rachel Brown
got the Harvard softball team off on the right foot, tossing a
no-hitter in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Princeton to
open its Ivy League schedule Friday. The Crimson improves to 8-14
on the season and has won four straight games while Princeton falls
to 6-19 on the year.
Brown allowed just two base runners in game one, facing 22
batters and striking out seven to collect her first career
no-hitter and sixth win of the season. Stephanie Krysiak provided
all the offense Harvard would need, driving in Emily Henderson with
a single and scoring on a passed ball in the third inning. Krysiak
added an RBI double in the seventh and scored the final Harvard run
to seal the 4-0 final.
Princeton jumped out to an early lead in game two, plating a run
in the bottom of the first courtesy of a Jamie Lettire double to
center. Senior hurler Margaux Black kept the Crimson close through
the middle of the game, pitching four strong innings and allowing
just the one run. The guests mounted a comeback in the top of the
sixth as Jane Alexander led off with a single and Jessica Pledger
and Jessica Ferri followed with consecutive doubles to give Harvard
a 2-1 lead. Ashley Heritage scored the final run of the game on a
Princeton error and Brown pitched the final two innings to collect
the save.
Julia Moore was credited with the win for Harvard in game two,
pitching one inning of relief and picking up one strikeout. Pledger
finished the second game with two hits and an RBI.
Harvard is back in action Saturday as it takes on Cornell in an
Ivy League doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m.
