CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—On the eve of Alex
Biega's graduation from Harvard, Darcy Regier, general
manager of the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres, has
announced that the 2009-10 Crimson captain has signed a
professional contract with the club.
Biega, a defenseman and the 116th captain of Harvard men's
hockey, signed a two-year contract with the Sabres, who drafted him
in the fifth round of the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
He was the 147th overall selection in the draft prior to his
arrival in Cambridge.
The Montreal native was the Tudor Cup winner as Harvard's
most valuable player in each of the last two seasons. During his
career, he was a three-time All-Ivy League pick and a two-time
All-ECAC Hockey selection. He was named to the ECAC All-Rookie
squad after his freshman season, was a league all-tournament pick
as a sophomore, was named a New England All-Star as a junior and
wrapped up his senior year at the NCAA Frozen Four Skills
Challenge.
Biega did not miss a game in his four years, tying for eighth on
Harvard's career games-played list with 131, and skated on
the Crimson's top defensive pair throughout much of his
career. He logged 70 career points for Harvard. His 55 assists were
the most by a Harvard defenseman since Derek Maguire '94
recorded 71 helpers from 1991-94. In 2008-09, Biega became the
first defenseman since Don Sweeney '88 to lead the Crimson in
assists, with 16.
Alex was one of three Biega brothers on the Crimson this season.
He and younger brothers Michael and Danny made up the second trio
of brothers to simultaneously skate for Harvard. Danny, a rising
sophomore in 2010-11, is ranked 46th on NHL Central
Scouting's final ranking of North American Skaters for the
2010 NHL Entry Draft.
