BURLINGTON, Vt.—Freshman Rachael Rosenfeld
tied the game with her first career goal in the first half, but
Maine scored in the final 10 minutes to hand the Harvard field
hockey team its first loss of the season, 2-1, Saturday afternoon
in the Sheraton Catamount Classic at Moulton Winder Field.
Cynthia
Tassopoulos made eight saves to lead the Harvard defense, while
Chloe Keating
recorded an assist for her 10th point in three games for the
Crimson (2-1). Michelle Niedziejko had the winning goal for the
Black Bears (3-2), who got a goal and an assist from Kelly
Newton.
Harvard had scored early in each of its first two games of the
season, but in this contest Maine got on the board first. Newton
deflected a long ball from Stephanie Gardiner in the game's ninth
minute. The Crimson was quick to respond, however, with Rosenfeld
finishing off a spurt of Harvard pressure in front of the Maine
goal by scoring less than eight minutes later.
Tassopoulos and Maine goalie Brittany Fleck kept the score at
1-1 for nearly 40 minutes, until Niedziejko netted the game-winner
at 65:24. The Crimson could not get a goal of its own in the second
half, despite earning four penalty corners. Fleck finished with
four saves.
In the first game of the day, host Vermont registered a 2-1
victory against Pacific in double overtime. The Crimson and
Catamounts clash Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
