CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's
water polo team defeated Cornell's club team, 15-6, to open the Ivy
Championship. Harvard used a balanced attack in the win as nine
different players found the back of the net.
The Crimson (7-15) put on an impressive scoring display in the
first quarter and jumped to an 8-3 lead. The first seven goals were
scored by seven different Crimson players before John
Holland-McCowan capped off the first quarter with a pair of
scores.
Kevin
DiSilvestro started the scoring 50 seconds into the game before
Cornell (9-3) evened the score 20 seconds later. The 1-1 tie was
the last time the game was close as Harvard scored the next four
and handled the Big Red for the remainder of the contest.
Harvard extended its advantage to eight before halftime with
four second frame goals. Max Murphy
opened the second with a rebound goal after a shot by Mike Katzer hit
the left post and Ryan Rule added
two goals in the quarter.
The Crimson controlled the ball for a majority of the second
half and stepped up on the defensive end. Goalie Jimmy Field
limited Cornell to two goals over the final 16 minutes, including a
shutout of the third quarter.
Thomas
McNulty became the ninth Harvard player to score in the game
with a goal in the third quarter.
With the win, the Crimson advanced to the semifinal of the Ivy
Championship. Harvard will face Brown at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at
Blodgett Pool. The championship game will be at 5 p.m. tomorrow and
the third-place game will be held at 3:30 p.m. For the complete
