CLEVELAND – A total of ten Harvard
fences took to the strip at the USA Fencing November North American
Cup, Nov. 8-11. The event, which is a key qualifier for both the
2014 Senior and Junior World Championships, featured the best
fencers on the continent, including over 1,000 athletes, and marked
the first 2013-14 North American Cup of the year.
Foil fencer Jerry Chang
took home the Junior men's foil gold medal to punch his ticket to
compete at the Junior Worlds. The sophomore overcame a field of 174
fencers to claim first for the second straight year. In a dramatic
gold medal bout, Chang downed Nobuo Bravo of Princeton by a 15-14
margin. The Mountain View, Calif., native also battled in the
Division I men's foil where he tied for 11th.
Chang was joined in the foil by junior Brian
Kaneshige, classmate Michael Woo,
as well as freshman Stephen
Mageras. Kaneshige put on an impressive show in the Division I
pool where he finished seventh. Also in Division I action, Woo
claimed 15th and Mageras turned in a 36th-place performance. Woo,
who was seeded fourth in the junior's tournament, was knocked out
of juniors elimination draw by Chang, and went on to finish 19th
while Mageras finished 34th.

Raynis and Alexander
Ryjik, Jr., rounded out Crimson men fencers. Raynis competed in
the Division I men's epee while Ryjik fenced in the Division I
men's saber.
Harvard was represented in each weapon on the women's side. Adrienne Jarocki paced the Crimson's women performances
with a ninth-place finish in the Junior women's saber. The freshman
also fenced in the Division I Saber where she took 17th.
In junior women's epee, Nina van Loon had an impressive run, finishing 17th out
of 145 junior epee entrants. The sophomore took 57th in the
Division I women's epee.
Freshman Hali Nelson turned in Harvard's ninth top-20
finish taking 10th in the Junior women's foil. Classmate Liana
Yamin also competed in the event that featured 131 fencers.
Harvard's 2013-14 season will commence with the women at home
against Tufts, Thursday, Dec. 5 while the men get underway three
days later at the Tradition Tournament in Fairfield, Conn.
