Box Score Noel Painter scored her first career hat trick Saturday (Gil Talbot).
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Noel Painter helped Harvard comeback from a 2-0 deficit, recording her first career hat trick, but Brown scored a late regulation goal and the game-winner in the second overtime to earn the 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson dominated the shot advantage, particularly in the first half, outshooting the Bears 13-2, but both of those attempts ended in goals for Brown. Meghan O'Donnell scored her first goal of the half in the eighth minute, corralling a long pass from Katarina Angus before finding the back of the net. O'Donnell notched her sixth of the year in the 19th minute, knocking in a point blank shot from Clayton Christus' pass.
Harvard's offensive onslaught finally broke through with Painter's first goal in the 26th minute. Painter used exceptional stick control to tip in a pass in the air from Elizabeth Jacobson, cutting the Brown lead in half. The Crimson was able to even the score with just over a minute remaining in the first period on another tip in. Ellie Cookson sent a shot towards the net and again Painter was there, sending it into the back of the cage.
Painter gave the Crimson the lead just over midway through the second period, once again tipping in a shot from a teammate. This time, it was Hannah Wellington's shot attempt that Painter redirected past the Brown goalkeeper, putting Harvard ahead, 3-2.
The Crimson maintained that lead until the final minute of regulation when Hannah Rogers put home a rebound, sending the game into extra time.
Brown put the pressure on in the first overtime, firing off five shots on goal, but Issy Davies came up with each save for the Crimson. Six minutes into the second overtime, the Bears got the game winner through the stringent Harvard defense, with Jaclyn Torres pushing in a pass from Rogers.
Harvard will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 5, taking on Boston University at 3 p.m. on New Balance Field.
