BOSTON – Junior Elizabeth Jacobson scored her fifth goal of the season, but the Harvard field hockey team (6-4) dropped a 3-1 decision to crosstown rival Boston University (5-5) Sunday at New Balance Field.
Both squads fired off 11 shots in the game, with Harvard putting nine on net, but Valentina Cerda Eimbcke made eight stops for the Terriers.
Amanda Cassera opened the scoring for BU in the eighth minute, redirecting a shot off a penalty corner. Harvard responded at the 17:03 mark, with Hannah Wellington setting up Jacobson for a reverse-stick shot eight yards out for the goal.
Four minutes before the halftime break, the Terriers regained the lead. Cassera fed Taylor Blood at the left post, where she planted the ball in the back of the cage. Hester van der Laan added an insurance goal for BU in the 58th minute, scoring from the middle of the circle.
The Crimson had two scoring opportunities as the clock was winding down, both off the stick of sophomore Marissa Balleza, but Cerda came up with the stops to close out the win for the Terriers.
Harvard is on the road again next weekend, visiting Fairfield on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
