BROOKLYN, N.Y. - No. 19 Harvard men's water polo (17-7, 5-4) opened its final road trip of 2014 with a 19-16 overtime loss to No. 17 St. Francis (11-9, 9-1).
Both teams opened the game with strong defense, seeing St. Francis take a 4-2 lead after the first eight minutes. The second period saw much of the same, with five total goals being scored. Freshman Colin Chiapello found the back of the net twice in the quarter, but heading into halftime the Crimson trailed the Terriers 7-5.
The Crimson offense found its stride in the third quarter led by Blake Lee's three goals. With two minutes left in the third and down by two, sophomore Dan Stevens scored twice in 20 seconds to tie the game. B. Lee gave the Crimson its first lead of the game with 40 seconds left, which would hold heading in to the fourth quarter.
The final frame was action-packed with Harvard and St. Francis trading goals throughout. With 1:30 left in the game, senior captain Max Murphy notched his first goal of the game to give the Crimson a 15-14 lead. The Terrieres found themselves with a man advantage late in the fourth and capitalized to tie the game, forcing overtime.
Murphy was the first player to find the back of the net in overtime, putting Harvard ahead, 16-15. St. Francis was then able to rattle off four unanswered goals, securing its 19-16 win.
Harvard is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 2, with two CWPA Northern Division games. The Crimson takes on Fordham at 11 a.m. and then face off against Iona at 4 p.m.
