Women's Tennis Hosts Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard women's tennis team welcomes Boston University, Cornell, Pittsburgh and Syracuse to the Murr Center for its fall finale, the Harvard Invitational Nov. 7-9. Doubles action will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, followed by singles play at 10:30 a.m. Saturday's play will begin on Saturday at 8 a.m. with doubles and shift to singles immediately following.

Last Time Out
The Crimson performed at a high level at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals. Sophomore June Lee led the way for Harvard, advancing to the semifinals after winning her first four matches. Freshman Ellen Jang-Milsten teamed with senior captain Sylvia Li in the doubles bracket, advancing to the quarterfinals after three victories.

About Harvard
Playing in four tournaments to this point, Harvard has earned plenty of hardware. The Crimson won two of three flights at the Cissie Leary Invitational and won all-four singles flights at the Billie Jean King Invite. Sophomore June Lee leads the team with 10 singles victories, and all of Harvard's student-athletes sport a .500 record or better. In doubles play, Monica Lin has combined with teammates for nine wins, while Ellen Jang-Milsten and Sylvia Li have eight. The Crimson boasts a 77-31 overall record, including a 55-21 mark in singles play and 22-10 record in doubles.

Keeping it Fresh
Harvard's three freshmen have adjusted well to collegiate tennis, combining for a 19-6 record in singles play and 13-3 when paired with a teammate. Nikki Kallenberg won the A-division at the Billie Jean King Invitational, and Ellen Jang-Milsten won the B-division at the Cissie Leary Invitational.  Annika Ringblom paired with Monica Lin to win the doubles flight in the opening tournament as well.

Scene Setter
A three-day invitational, the first two days will open with doubles action followed by two rounds of singles competition. On the last day, the singles championship will be played prior to the doubles finale.

The Last Harvard Invite
Last season's invitational featured a three-day round-robin format. Then-senior Hannah Morrill went a combined 6-0 to earn top honors, while Monica Lin and Danielle Mirda each won two singles matches. Lin also teamed up with Morrill to go undefeated playing doubles.

Scouting Boston University
The Terriers conclude their fall season in Cambridge after competing in three tournaments thus far. The Terriers have compiled a 20-31 combined record in singles play, with Johanna Hyoty leading the way with six wins. Iryna Kostirko and Barbara Rodriguez have added four wins apiece.

Scouting Cornell
Cornell has sent student-athletes to four tournaments throughout the fall, including two hosted in Ithaca. Finishing the fall slate at Harvard, Cornell enters the invitational with a 46-16 combined record. Lizzie Stewart leads the Big Red at 9-1 with teammate Marika Cusick not far behind at 8-2.

Scouting Pittsburgh
After competing in four tournaments in September and October, the Panthers end their fall season at the Harvard Invitational. The Panthers have gone 35-51 in singles and amassed a 18-22 doubles record, with Lolade Ogungbesan holding a 6-5 mark through the opening months.

Scouting Syracuse
The Orange have sent student-athletes to three tournaments during  the fall season. The team won each singles flight at the West Point Invite and had three student-athletes advance to the round of 16 at the ITA Northeast Regional. Syracuse is a combined 39-13 in singles play and 17-6 in doubles. Valeria Salazar leads the Orange at 10-1.

On the Sidelines
Traci Green is in her eighth season at the helm for the Crimson. Under her guidance, Harvard won the program's 18th Ivy League title in 2009 with a 13-8 overall record and a 6-1 conference mark. Green owns a 73-63 overall record, including a 71-46 mark over the past six seasons, and 30-19 mark in the Ancient Eight.

What's Next
The Crimson takes a break after completing its fall schedule. The spring season involves team head-to-head matchups, with Harvard opening against Rhode Island Jan. 19.
