With three wins over the weekend, the Harvard men's water polo team looks to carry the momentum in to the Bruno Fall Classic (Gil Talbot)
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After opening the season with three wins, the Harvard men's water polo team will travel to Providence, R.I. to play in the Bruno Fall Classic hosted by Brown. The Crimson will play four matches over two days this weekend, taking on Santa Clara and UC-Irvine Saturday, then Navy and conference opponent Connecticut College Sunday.
Harvard scored an impressive 36 goals in three games last weekend at the Princeton Invitational, led by Ben Zepfel who netted 9 goals. The Crimson also played in a nail-bitter against Bucknell, scoring with 10 seconds left in regulation and winning in overtime, 12-10. They will look to carry this momentum into the Bruno Fall Classic.
About Santa Clara
The Broncos open their season at the Bruno Fall Classic after finishing 17-15 in 2013. The Crimson and Santa Clara met last season with the Broncos coming away with a 12-9 victory. The Broncos bring back standout freshman Graham McClone, who scored 37 goals, after losing their top two scorers to graduation. Senior goalie Max Pritchett also returns for his final season, after starting every match for Santa Clara and notching 360 blocks.
No. 8 UC – Irvine
UC – Irvine opened the season with four wins at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif. The Anteaters were impressive on offense over the weekend, scoring 62 goals in four games, including 25 against La Verne. UC-Irvine is led by sophomore Lovre Milos. After scoring 23 goals early in the season, the Crimson defense will have to keep tabs on Milos the entire match. The Crimson fell to the Anteaters last season in the Bruno Fall Classic, 18-9.
Connecticut College
The Camels will open their season against the Crimson this Sunday in an early CWPA Northern Division clash. Connecticut College will look to bounce back in 2014 after finishing last season 3-26. The Camels will be lead my new head coach Matt Anderson who comes to Connecticut College after 12 seasons at Michigan. In the pool, senior All-American Rob Spencer will look to match his team-best 55-goal performance from a season ago. The Crimson defeated Connecticut College in both meetings last season, and Harvard is on a 20-match win streak against the Camels dating back to 2000.
No. 16 Navy
The Midshipman opened the season with five victories as hosts of the Navy Open. Navy was strong at both ends of the pool, scoring at least 12 goals, while yielding no more than six in five matches. Navy is led by juniors Carl Dowzicky and Carpenter Warren, who led the Midshipman in goals with 58 and 53 respectively. In last year's matchup Harvard took down then No.-17, 13-10, in a hard-fought match.
