Harvard closed out its regular season and extended its winning-streak to eight games (Gil Talbot).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 12 men's water polo blew past Iona in its regular season finale, overpowering the Gaels with five-goal runs in the second and third periods to cruise to a 19-9 victory in Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division action. The Crimson extended its winning-streak to eight games, improving to 17-8 on the season and 9-3 in CWPA Northern Division play.
Noah Harrison started the attack less than a minute into the game with his first goal of the contest and Ben Zepfel followed shortly after with a pair of goals. Iona got on the board with a pair of goals before Nick Bunn notched a one-timer from Nathan Ondracek and Harrison closed the frame by deking the Gaels keeper with a last-second shot as Harvard took a 5-2 lead.
The Crimson broke the game open in the second period as Harrison, Colin Chiapello and Viktor Wrobel started the assault as each fired home scores. Harrison scorched back-to-back goals, giving him a game-high five tallies, while Blake Lee smoked a shot into the top shelf as part of a 6-0 run as Harvard claimed an 11-4 lead at the end of the half.
Iona had the first tally of the third period, but Harvard went on another five-goal run to put the game out of reach. Zepfel fired in a rocket to complete the hat trick and start the scoring for Harvard and Robbie Fluegge notched his first goal of the day. Harry Tafur, Grayson Judge and Ondracek each netted goals in the waning minutes of the period period, giving Harvard a commanding 16-5 lead.
The Crimson continued to pour on the attack, capitalizng on transition goals and nifty passing as Bunn snapped the back of the net and Flugge netted a break-away score. The pair continued to scorch the scoreboard as Bunn completed the hat-trick on a feed from Flugge. Iona netted four-straight goals, but it was too little too late as Harvard cruised to its eighth-straight victory with a 19-9 decision. Colin Woolway, Connor Denney and Anthony Ridgley all saw action in net and each recorded at least one save.
Harvard locked down the No. 2 seed for next weekend's Northern Division championship hosted by Brown from Nov. 7-8. The Crimson will take on No. 7 seed Connecticut College at 11 a.m. in its opening game of the championship.
