Harvard Formally Announces William "Bill" J. Cleary '56 Harvard Ice Hockey Endowment

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – On Saturday, Nov. 7, at the men's ice hockey game against Brown, Harvard Athletics officially announced its most recent endowment, the William "Bill" J. Cleary '56 Harvard Ice Hockey Endowment. The evening featured a pregame reception in the Boynton Lounge, as well as an on-ice presentation for Cleary during the first intermission.

"Given all that Bill Cleary has meant to the Harvard Hockey Program as a player, coach, an athletic director, and an alumnus, it is very fitting for this endowment to honor his many contributions," said Bob Scalise, the John D. Nichols '53 Family Director of Athletics. "It is especially note-worthy to have former players honor their coach and affirm the positive lessons they learned under his leadership."

"There aren't many times I'm at a loss for words, but on Saturday I was," stated Cleary. "It was certainly a meaningful experience to see so many of my former players. I also really appreciated that there were managers, as well as junior varsity and freshmen players who came back. All these individuals were special and made important contributions to the hockey program at every level. The big thing for me is that this new endowment will ensure that future kids will have the chance to play for and experience the best of Harvard hockey, a group I've cherished and valued greatly over the years."

The William "Bill" J. Cleary '56 Harvard Ice Hockey Endowment was established by the Friends of Harvard Hockey to celebrate Coach Cleary's six-decade association with Harvard Athletics as a student-athlete, coach and former athletic director. The endowment will support staffing, out-of-region travel, recruitment and hockey specific facility enhancements for the men's and women's hockey programs.
