CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard wrestling team swept its home dual meets Saturday afternoon, topping Brown, 21-17, and Johnson & Wales, 30-16.
With the win over Brown, Harvard (3-7, 1-6 EIWA) picks up its first EIWA victory of the year. The Bears slip to 4-9 overall and 2-5 in the EIWA, while the Wildcats slip to 18-7. Brown also defeated Johnson & Wales, 27-15, in the third team dual match Saturday.
Against the Bears, Ryan Osleeb held off Ezekiel Salvo, 4-2, at 133 lbs., to cut the team score deficit to 6-3. Next up, Todd Preston, ranked No. 15 in the nation at 141 lbs., scored a major decision vs. Anthony Finocchiaro. Preston outscored Finocchiaro, 17-5, picking up four team points to give Harvard a 7-6 lead.
After Brown won the next two matches to go up, 14-7, Devon Gobbo stepped on the mat and topped Richard Muniz, 4-1, at 165 lbs. Next, Josef Johnson picked up a 3-1 sudden victory in overtime against Richard McDonald to pull the Crimson within a single point in the team score, 14-13.
With Harvard trailing, 17-13, with two matches remaining, Josh Popple defeated Augustus Marker, 10-2, for a major decision, tying the score, 17-17. In the final bout, David Ng shut out Sebastien Levin at heavyweight, 8-0, for another major decision, clinching the team match for Harvard, 21-17.
In the match against the Wildcats, Osleeb picked up a 5-2 decision at 133 lbs., and then Preston, who moves to 10-0 in dual meets this year, followed with his second major decision of the day, 10-2, vs. Michael Ferinde, as Harvard led the match, 7-6.
At 165 lbs., Gobbo got the Crimson back in contention by pinning Sean Prell at 2:48, as Harvard trailed by three points, 16-13, with four matches remaining. Johnson tied the team score, 16-16, with a 4-1 decision at 174 lbs., vs. Ken Dougherty.
In the final bouts, Michael Mocco held off Michael Labell, 5-3, at 184 lbs., and then Popple earned a tech fall at 4:44, defeating Andrew Cavanna, 16-0. With Popple's win, Harvard clinched the team match, having gone up by a score of 24-16.
The Crimson will close out the regular season at home against Columbia Friday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. Prior to the match next week, seniors James Fox, Gregory Kristof, Max Mejia, David Ng, Ryan Osleeb and Alexis Wagener will be honored in a Senior Day ceremony.
