Harvard split its opening games of CWPA Northern Division Play (Gil Talbot).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard's men's water polo split its CWPA Northern Division opener, dropping its first game in a heartbreaking 10-9 loss to Brown in double overtime before trouncing Connecticut College in the nightcap, 17-5.
In the opening game of the day against No. 13 Brown, Harvard claimed a 2-1 lead after the first quarter of action as Blake Lee and Dan Stevens started the attack for the host. The Bears answered with three straight goals, taking a 5-2 lead in a closely contested first half.
Harvard responded with a furious attack to start the second half, scoring five goals in a back-and-forth contest to tie the game at seven. Noah Harrison netted a hat trick while Joey Colton delivered the equalizer in the closing seconds of the quarter.
Brown went ahead by one to start the final quarter, but Harrison tied up the game with his fourth goal of the game. The Bears took the lead once again with 45-seconds remaining as all hope seemed lost for Harvard. However, Blake Lee delivered a slick backhanded shot with one second remaining to push the game to overtime, but Harvard could not muster any more magic as Brown scored the go-ahead goal in the first of two overtime periods, sinking Harvard, 10-9.
The Crimson returned to run past Connecticut College, 17-5, to earn its first CWPA Northern Division win. Harvard registered its highest scoring output of the season as 12 different members of the Crimson found the back of the net.
Viktor Wrobel led all scorers with three goals. Harry Tafur had a solid all-around performance, netting two goals, dishing out a team-high three assists and made two steals. Colin Woolway and Connor Denney kept the Camel attack at bay, combining to surrender a season-low five goals.
Harvard will return to action tomorrow as it hosts cross-town rival No. 20 MIT at 1 p.m.
