No. 15 Harvard Opens Julian Frasier Memorial Tournament With Win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The No. 15 Harvard men's water polo team kicked off the Julian Frasier Memorial Tournament in California with an 11-10 win over Santa Clara. Four members of the Crimson accounted for the 11 goals scored, with freshman Dennis Blyashov netting six, followed by two apiece from senior captain Colin Chiapello and sophomore Austin Sechrest.

Sechrest got the Crimson rolling, scoring the first goal of the contest on a penalty shot. Less than a minute later, Chiapello netted his first of the night. At the end of the first, it was Harvard up 5-1 over Santa Clara. Chiapello won the sprint at the beginning of the second quarter to give the Crimson possession early before he netted his second goal of the night, Sechrest closed out the first half for the Crimson by netting the team's seventh goal. Harvard headed into halftime with a 7-5 lead over the Broncos. 

In the second half, the Crimson found the back of the net four more times to secure the 11-10 win. Blyashov netted the game-winner with a little more than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter. In net, sophomore Nikhil Suri stood strong, making eight key saves in the victory. 

Harvard Highlights:

  • Freshman Dennis Blyashov netted six goals, while senior captain Colin Chiapello and sophomore Austin Sechrest each scored two. Junior Nick Bunn also netted one goal.
  • Sophomore Nikhil Suri brought his season-total saves to 77 after making eight saves against Santa Clara. 

Game Notes:

  • Harvard moves to 5-7 all-time against Santa Clara.

Harvard continues action at the Julian Frasier Memorial Tournament on Saturday with games against Fresno Pacific at 1:20 p.m. EST and San Jose State at 5:20 p.m. EST.
