The Last Time Out
On Saturday, in a matchup between the top two teams in the Ivy League, No. 14 Princeton edged No. 15 Harvard, 3-0, at Berylson Field. Junior goalkeeper Libby Manela made two saves in net, and Harvard owned an 8-7 edge in shots, but the Crimson could not solve Princeton goalkeeper Grace Baylis (four saves).
The First Line
• Harvard has emerged as one of the top offensive teams in the nation, ranking first in the Ivy League and fifth in the country with an average of 3.79 goals per game. On the defensive side, Harvard leads the Ivy League, allowing just 1.27 goals per game.
• Harvard has a chance to set the program record for wins in single season, a mark established last year, when the Crimson finished the year 12-6 (7-0 Ivy League), matching a program record for wins and capturing its first conference title since 2004, Harvard's first outright Ivy crown in field hockey since 1990.
• Several players have keyed Harvard's success on offense. Reigning Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-America Bente van Vlijmen has 20 points (nine goals, two assists). a new career high and sophomore Maddie Earle (seven goals, four assists) is also having a career year. Freshman Mimi Tarrant has 22 points (six goals, six assists) to lead all Ivy League freshmen. Freshman Hannah Pearce has six goals on the year, and senior captain Hannah Wellington has 14 points (six goals, two assists).
Before an injury, junior Kathleen Young (10 goals, three assists) was a major contributor as well.
• Senior goalkeeper Olivia Startup (UC Davis, Pacific, Northeastern, Lafayette, Holy Cross, Brown, Cornell) and junior goalkeeper Libby Manela (Stanford, UConn, New Hampshire, Yale, Penn, Boston College, Princeton) have both started in net for the Crimson, with Startup earning seven wins in all seven games, and Manela putting up some of the best goalkeeping numbers in the nation (1.15 GAA, 6th NCAA; .727 save percentage).
Scouting Boston University
After clinching a third straight Patriot League regular season crown, BU comes to Harvard winners of four of their last five games. Leading the Terriers on offense is freshman Alisa Connolly (10 goals), with senior Grace Boston (seven goals, two assists) also having a strong year up front. Millie Baker (5-3-0, 2.12 GAA, .538 save%) and Kathleen Keegan (5-3-0, 1.46 GAA, .734 save%) have split time in net.
Cookson Breaks Assists Record
Senior Ellie Cookson became Harvard's all-time leader with 27 career assists with an assist at Northeastern on Sept. 15. Cookson broke the previous mark held by Jen Ahn '04, and Ceci Clark '92, who both had 26 career assists. She has extended her record to 32, leading the team with eight assists on the season.
On The Right Track
Tjerk van Herwaarden has guided the Crimson back onto the national scene since taking over the helm of the program six years ago. In addition to leading Harvard to the Ivy title and NCAA Tournament, the 12 wins in 2016 matched a program record. His 42 wins in the first five years of his career at Harvard is just one shy of the most ever by a Crimson field hockey coach. This season he has guided Harvard to its highest national ranking (No. 13) ever.
