CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Lionel Hollins, an NBA Coach with more than 30 years of experience, has been announced as the guest clinician for the Harvard Basketball Coaches Clinic. The clinic is set for Saturday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the newly-renovated Lavietes Pavilion.
Hollins coached in the NBA from 1988-2016 after opening his tenure on the sidelines at Arizona State, and has served as the head coach for the Vancouver Grizzlies, Memphis Grizzlies and Brooklyn Nets. As the head coach in Memphis, Hollins led the Grizzlies to three-straight playoff berths from 2010-13, with the 2012-13 team winning 56 games and advancing to the conference finals.
Elite as a player prior to his coaching career, Hollins was the sixth overall pick in the 1975 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers, and was instrumental in leading the Blazers to the 1977 NBA Championship. The Arizona State product and collegiate All-American earned NBA All-Star and All-Defensive first team nods in 1978, and was again an All-Defensive honoree in 1979.
Making stops in four cities after Portland, Hollins went on to play for the Philadelphia 76ers, San Diego Clippers, Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets, and his No. 14 jersey is retired in Portland. For his career, Hollins averaged 11.6 points, 4.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game as one of the top point guards in the league.
