Second Period Surge Lifts No. 16 Men's Ice Hockey Past Union, 8-5

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A six-goal outburst in the second period helped No. 16 Harvard men's ice hockey (10-6-4, 8-4-3 ECAC Hockey) earn a 8-5 win at Union (6-18-3, 4-10-1 ECAC Hockey) on Friday night (Jan. 31) at Messa Rink.

Sophomore forward Jack Drury and first-year forward Nick Abruzzese each had two goals and two assists, and sophomore forward Casey Dornbach added four assists to lead the Crimson offense. Six different Harvard players recorded multiple-point efforts, including Henry Thrun (three assists), Reilly Walsh (two assists) and Jack Rathbone (two assists). 

Harvard outshot Union, 40-31, on the night, and went 3-for-5 on the man advantage.

The Crimson trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes of play, but took control of the game with a dominant effort in the second period.

The surge began with two goals in a span of 31 seconds, as junior forward Henry Bowlby redirected a shot from Thrun past Union goaltender Darion Hanson at 1:46. Then on the next shift, sophomore forward R.J. Murphy beat Hanson over the shoulder with a beautiful wrist shot at 2:17 to make it 2-1. 

The scoring continued as sophomore defenseman Marshall Rifai scored his first career goal at 7:34 with a well-placed wrist shot from the high slot.

Then Drury extended his point streak to eight game with his first goal of the night, as Dornbach curled around the net and found him in the slot for a goal at 13:41. Just over two minutes later, sophomore forward Baker Shore scored a put back goal at 17:23 to make it 5-1, chasing Hanson from the game. Abruzzese's first goal of the night came on the power play at 17:23, a wide angle shot that deflected off the goaltender and in.

Union added a late power play goal at 19:57, but the damage was done and Harvard held a 6-2 lead after 40 minutes.

In the third period, Union cut the Crimson lead to 6-3 at 6:44, but two more power play goals from Harvard on consecutive 5-on-3 chances put the game out of reach for good. Abruzzese finished off a beautiful sequence of passes from Dornbach and Rathbone at 9:11, an Drury added his second of the night at 10:40 to make it 8-3.

Two late Union goals, at 10:40 and 13:47, the latter with an extra attacker accounted for the final score.

- Sophomore forward Jack Drury (two goals, two assists) has 17 points (nine goals, eight assists) in his last eight games with an eight-game point game streak.
- Sophomore forward Casey Dornbach (four assists) has 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) in his last 11 games.
- First-year forward Nick Abruzzese recorded a career high four points (two goals, two assists), and now has 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in his last seven games.
- Harvard scored a season high eight goals, and finished 3-for-5 on the power play, matching a season high for power play goals in a game. Harvard is now 30.7% (23-for-75) on the season on the man advantage.
- The Crimson recorded its first win at Messa Rink since Jan. 22, 2010.
