Softball Falls In Late Innings to Furman, 6-5, and Gardner Webb, 4-3

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Harvard softball fell to Furman, 6-5, and Gardner Webb, 4-3, on day one of the Red and Black Softball Tournament at Gardner Webb University in Boiling Greens, N.C.

The Crimson began the day taking the early 1-0 lead against Furman in the top of the first inning. First-year Lauren Bobowski walked to lead things off and was later drove in by Allison Heffley.

Harvard continued scoring in the second as Teagan Shaw and Mackenzie Tyler each hit singles and stole a few bases to get into scoring position. Trina Hoang brought them around to score with a single to make the score 3-0.

The Crimson scored two more runs to extend the lead to 5-2. In the fifth inning junior Alyssa Saldana drove in Amerys Barshtak with a single and in the sixth Megan Welsh hit a single to score Trina Hoang.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Furman scored four runs to win the game by a final of 6-5.

In game two on the day against Gardner Webb, Harvard jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Trina Hoang singled to get things rolling for the Crimson. Sophomore Megan Welsh later homered to give the Crimson the early lead.

Gardner Webb answered in the bottom of the third with two runs to tie the score at 2-2. First-year Allison Heffley hit her first collegiate home run over the right field fence to put the Crimson back on top 3-2.

The Runnin' Bulldogs would score again in the fifth and in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure the win 4-3.

  • Trina Hoang led the Crimson against Furman with two hits and two RBIs.
  • First-year Allison Heffley went 3 for 6 on the day with three hits, including her first collegiate homerun and two RBIs.
  • Megan Welsh hit her second homerun of the season and lead the team with two RBIs in game two against Gardner Webb.
